Super-size ambulance

Going back to the point about the ambulances, I think that a lot of the people who are 50st+ don't actually realise that they have got that big - you often see them on tv shows where it comes as a surprise to them to learn their true weight. Of course, they know they are big, but usually seem to vastly underestimate how much they weigh since it is unlikely they will have scales available that can weigh them. :(

Sorry I think it was comment that started the hijack. Whilst there may be medical reasons why a small minority of people are obese (I have only come across one person with a genuine reason in my life and they were only just obese) most just exercise no self control! The simple rule is if you eat more calories than you expend you put on weight, and the reverse applies. This often seems combined with a serious under estimate of how much the person eats! This lack of discipline occurs in many places these days; binge drinking, obesity, anti-social behaviour, etc. National service or six months in a "boot camp" would sort most of these people out. In fact I will e-mail David Cameron tonight.

Would you be willing to put a copy of your email up on the forum?

So, when I left school I was a rather skinny seventy kilos. That was due to highly active life at school and poor D management making it hard for me to gain weight. Now that I've been out of school two years things have changed. I'm working and have been a student for a little now. I'm somewhat less active than I used to be (laziness has a very large part to play) and I manage my D alot better. My weight has now gone to eighty five kilos. I suppose I've filled out to what is more befitting me in terms of size. The good thing is I don't look like I've gained alot of weight, I seem to have filled out. I'm fortunate that my job is a physical one so I am kept active through that. I just need to eat a little bit less!

Oh dear, let's not have this old chestnut brought out again. It is very easy to say that it is all down to one 'simple' rule or fact, but that completely ignores the fact that people are not simple organisms and they have very complex reasons for whatever their physical appearance may be. You might like to compare such a notion to the one which says that diabetes is easily controlled by simply doing everything that needs to be done and getting it right all the time, which is equally generalised and nonsensical. I consider such statements insulting and inflammatory and will act accordingly if repeated.

What did people think then

I was in tears through alot of the show, the lovely guy derek who found love with his blind g/f was so nice, the people that do this job are so admiral im in orr they do such a great job for these people..

That poor ladies legs wow that scared me 42 inches round were her legs, must be so hard im pleased she had family backing her..

Anyone who has had any experience with weight will know without support you get nowhere...this show really was a eye opener.

I just watched the programme and found it very interesting and quite emotional. Derek found love with Sandy who is blind, and it has given him some hope to make his life better. The ambulance drivers were a great bunch of people, I must say, I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. What did other people think? Sheena

I thought it was a very good programme, very sensitive but without hiding the realities of the lives of the people featured.

I thought it was a good programme, very well done, showing the consequences and reasons for being overweight. Great that these people are getting the help they need. I'd love to see them in a years time, hopefully getting on a lot better.

just watched it myself i found it intresting and also a bit sad...ever since i was a child ive always said that if i found myself in the position of a bad accident or serious illness where i needed to rely on people 100 percent i would rather die peacefuly than be a burden and watching this tonight made me feel about how worse im going to get as the years go on....good luck to all the brave people on the program and i do wish the best.....

this is my feelings and i dont want to peeve anybody off ....i guess that im having an off day and realy struggling to pull myself back in to line again having chocolate phase again and im not testing .....sorry for taking over thread

Topcat, sorry to hear you are feeling down, I hope that you are feeling brighter in the morning and have a good night's sleep 🙂

Stephen,

I find your assertion that those of us who are overweight /obese have no self control offensive. What is the underlying science that justifies the bold words above?

Dear Northerner,

Sorry, I missed your post to Stephen, I still would have liked to see him justify his viewpoint - never mind! :D

Warmest Regards Dodger

Thought it was a well made/balanced documentary.

I agree, a good programme, albeit some of the diabetic related comments made me both smile and and grimace.
"He has to eat more cause of his diabetics" springs to mind.
I think if anything this programme highlighted a need to educate and identify those who have weight problems far sooner, and greater information when diagnosed with diabetes. Could some who had retinopathy and neuropathy have been treated earlier?

To end with, and in an attmept to lift the sprits, my dietician once humorously noted to me.

"If you forget that the entry hole is larger than the exit, then where to do you think it's all going to go!!!"
