A friend of mine has just been told she has arthritis in all her joints and has asked me to find her a diet that might help (or certainly, what to avoid that might make things worse). I know a few members suffer from arthritis, so just wondering if you have any recommendations, books etc.? She doesn't have access to a computer, and I didn't want to just pick something that sounds good to me, given that I have no experience!

I think the problem with the answer here, is that diabetes takes priority, but I am sure I heard somewhere that the GL Diet can be beneficial.

Apparently tomatoes arent good if you have arthritis.

I can't specifically recommend a book northerner but I found this article very interesting because I have systemic arthritis myself. I'm not sure if your friend has rheumatoid or osteo but most recommendations for people with arthritis centre around the anti-inflammatory effects of adopting the Mediterranean diet. It's not dissimilar to the kind of food diabetics benefit from (with the possible exception of not so much fruit for us). The oil from fish is beneficial as are whole foods and dropping highly processed and sugar laden foods.

I'm not advocating this book as some kind of 'miracle cure' however, it's just that the foods recommended are the kind usually recommended for people with arthritis.

Many thanks @Amigo - I will try to find out what type it is. I've already recommended the Mediterranean diet to her for other reasons in the past, sov that would fit nicely with her current diet, I think! 🙂

Avoid anything acidic and some you might not think are - eg strawberries.

I agree with Amigo, a Mediterranean style diet with lots of olive oil and fish oils would conform to what most people find helps. The weird thing is it seems to help women more than men. Not fair:(

Years ago, a friend of my parents was told to go on a very specific diet for her Rheumatism. I am afraid I don't remember all the details, but if I recall correctly, it was No sugar, white carbs, alcohol, tomatoes or other acidic fruit/veg/foods like vinegar. Possibly no coffee, either. The alcohol exclusion was a major part of it, but I don't know whether that was because the lady found it traumatic to cut alcohol, or whether it was a cornerstone and vital to the diet.

She found it very effective.

(edited for sense! 🙂 )
