Sugar in pickles

Does the sugar in pickles affect our levels as we only eat the cucmber and not the pickle juice containing the sugar??.
 
The pickles will contain some of the sugar - it is what gives them the flavour.
And the pickles themselves will have some carbs (not just sugar) in naturally.
The answer to the question whether the amount of sugar in the pickles makes a difference is "maybe".

We are all different. Some people may dry off the pickles, some people may have one pickled onion, others may eat a whole jar, some people are more sensitive to carbs (all carbs, not just sugar) than others.
 
Or choose pickled veg without sugar. Personally I don’t like sugar in pickles anyway. The amount of carbs in pickled veg is usually minimal unless you go for one of the sweet types.

I have a nice jar of pickled onions on the go and they have no effect on my blood sugar (no added sugar - just vinegar and spices).
 
I eat pickled onions and pickled beetroot.
I was looking at beetroot the other day in the supermarket and the carb difference varies quite a lot depending on the brands, I was pretty surprised as I do like a scoff at beetroot from the jar now and then myself

Yes, my guess is that for most people pickles aren't likely to be significant (though I'm sure they may contain sugar) so I wouldn't worry too much about them.

I have mine in with cheese in a sandwich, accompanied with pickled onoins. These days a sandwich is one slice of Burgeon.
 
I think it may depend upon what you are considering pickles.... Obviously something like sweet pickle (ie. Branston etc) will contain sugar but something like pickled onions or pickled gherkins will have very little. Pickled beetroot can be higher because the beet has quite a bit of natural sugar like carrots and parsnips... it is a sweet root veg! Salt and sugar are also usually part of the pickling process, but a large portion of the small amount of sugar added will stay in the vinegar, so shouldn't cause much of a problem. I also have a feeling that the vinegar itself can have some sort of effect to offset the sugar absorption in some way. Not sure how but it does seem to be beneficial in reducing the spike from some foods in my experience.

Eat beetroot 5 days week, love it, on salads in sandwich with cheese.

Once over could eat pickled onions by jar, same with pickled eggs, now just eat pickled onions with Christmas dinner & Boxing Day with left over meat coleslaw egg & chips.

I don’t remember which brands but they went from 3g per 100g to 23g per 100g, the wide differential was the surprise, I’m sure the 3g version doesn’t taste that good but now when I’m treating myself I’ll b checking the labels
 
Yeah they've always differed by brand and varied. I dislike vinegar generally hence I've always bought just boiled beetroot with none, but for a few years now what is sold looking like just boiled (and skinned) beetroot (vacuum packed on the salad counter) actually is vinegared,

I thought a lot of German pickled whatever, tended to be more sour than sweet or neither? Or was that just a million years ago when i was younger?

I did not realzie that as I have never bought what looks like boiled beetroot.

I thought the same, sauerkraut which I also like a bit of now and then is the same but I’ve been on a real low carb mission so I’m checking everything for the last couple of months, wife told me I was getting fat lol, I’m 5’11” and 11.2 stone so trying to lose half a stone to keep her happy.

23g/100g seems lot, your not confusing whole weight including liquid.

Jar in fridge says 8.9/100g, says dry weight in brackets, just weighed 100g out on scales & it was 3 beets size of small egg, so not high at 3.3g per beet.
 
Just checked the jar of pickled onions I have in the fridge - 4.1g carbs per 100g drained weight. I reckon that would be approx 8 pickled onions. I’ve happily been munching on them and, as usual, ignoring them for insulin purposes with no ill effects on my blood sugar.

TBF, if you’re worrying about having 1/2 gram or 1g carbs, you need another glass of Christmas spirit :D

I buy fresh, uncooked, unpickled beetroot. They are very versatile in quiches, dips, salads (raw or cooked, shredded or diced, with mint, orange, feta, seeds, ...), risotto, just roasted as a side veggie, in chocolate cake and more (I have even pickled some for my boyfriend).
I will include some on my veggie wellington on Christmas Day.
I love the sweet earthy flavour which gets lost when you douse them in vinegar.
If you get the "full plants" you can use the leaves as a cheap (free) alternative to spinach or chard.
 
I've started to sate my penchant for pickles with kimchi or sauerkraut - neither are particularly high in sugar I think.
 
With you on the sauerkraut @ColinUK I always have several jars in the cupboard. Lovely with lots of mustard
