As part of my struggle to get my blood sugar on track, I have been looking more closely at what effect certain food and drinks have on my levels. I have reduced my carb intake a lot and have mainly salads with fish or chicken.

Tonight I took my sugar levels before drinking a can of soft drink and then monitored them for the next half hour. I found that my sugar levels rose 3 points over a 40 minute period. It's now suddenly dropped by 4 points. Where the weather has been hot for the past few months, I have been drinking a lot of tea, coffee, flavoured water and soft drinks. They all have the same artificial sweeteners in them.

Is it the sweeteners or is it the caffeine?

I going to try having tap water over the weekend and I will report back on what happens.

If the drink was carb and sugar free than it did not raise your blood sugars.

Sweeteners do not raise your blood sugar. I’ve heard some people say that caffeine can have an effect though.

I couldn't understand how they could but something in the drink definitely popped up my blood sugar. Maybe it was the caffeine. I'll have to try caffeine free and see if that has the same effect.

I have been drinking lots of really cold water with ice and slices of lemons, limes and oranges and find this really nice to drink. It also helps me drink lots more water than I would if I just had plain water 🙂 Really good now with the weather being so hot.
