Supporting clean water projects helps in so many ways - try http://www.wateraid.org/uk/ It's better that people have clean water AND breast feed, than don't have clean water AND use powered baby milk. I think Oxfam Unwrapped have an option to donate a toilet (latrine) or well in a developing country instead of giving a present to a friend / relative in the West.
