I am seeing a lot of people who have been referred to the same Diabetes NHS learning program I was, reporting that they feel bewildered by their diagnosis and have been given little information by their GP other than 'Oh just cut out sugary stuff and take the metformin'. I was telling this to my daughter who is a doctor and although she mainly sees women with gestational diabetes, she commented that some people's diet was so poor that any change would be beneficial and sometimes people were very negative about making dietary changes so metformin would help. So I was feeling a bit guilty about being rather critical.
So maybe GPs and HCPs do get a feeling for how the patient will receive the diagnosis and engage with a regime, be it dietary changes, the Shakes route, increasing exercise, LCHF or medication. Clearly it is all made more difficult with the lack of face to face meeting as much can be learnt from facial reactions from the patient.
