Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with type2 Diabetes 2 days ago. I have been given Metformin 500 twice a day. I would appreciate if you guys could tell me the best place to buy a blood sugar monitor. Thanks in advance.

The cheapest one around, especially for the strips is the SD codefree one, either from amazon or Home Health.

Definitely a good idea to get a meter, it helps with identifying what foods affect you and in what way. Unfortunately the same food can effect each of us in different way.

Have yo asked the GP practice if they will supply test strips on prescription, you might be lucky and have one of the very few that support type 2's with the testing.

Hi Strongbow, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did your diagnosis come about? As others have suggested the SD Codefree Meter is the one we would normally suggest as it has test strips at around £8 for 50 - far cheaper than most others. Since the test strips are what you will end up spending most money on, this cost is the main consideration. All meters in the UK have to conform to the same levels of accuracy, so the onew that are more expensive aren't necessarily better, they might just have more bells and whistles that you don't really need.

I'd recommend having a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S so you can understand how to use the meter efficiently to learn your tolerance for various aspects of your diet. Also, have a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter which should help to clarify Type 2 for you, and I'd recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, then you'll be all set! 🙂 Any questions or concerns, please just ask away and we will be happy to help 🙂

Just to let everyone know, I was diagnosed with type2 when the pharmacist asked me to go for a blood test to make sure my liver was ok with some of the medications I was taking. From blood test to diagnosis took 2 days, that's what I call service. I must say everyone I have spoken to on this forum has been very reassuring and helpful. Thank you all.

You're in the right place for help and advice. There's always someone around so you get quick answers to any questions you may have.
Once you get your meter you'll be able to work out which foods give you good (or bad) blood glucose levels and so can work towards good levels by adjusting your diet.
