Hi im on steroids for 4 days. Bs went from 5 to 14 almost immediately and was still this morning. Is this what i can expect?

When my daughter was on a short course of oral steroids her BG's were very high indeed - initially 20's until got ontop of it. I had to increase her basal to 200% and add a little extra on her boluses too to get her BG's back to any decent numbers. The effects lastest a day after stopping them too.

Yep, 'fraid so. Though, if you're on them long term, things do settle down.

Many thanks. Should just be 4 days for an allergic reaction. Will test now and increase basal

21.7 😱 have increased pump basal 50 pc see hoe that goes

You may even need more than that Tracey but see how you go - really nasty medication on the BG's. Can contribute to developing T2 I believe in a non D person - you can see why!

I was very anxious when the little one was on them with those high numbers, plus the fact she was wide awake at bedtime high as a kite 🙄

Yes, I've just had two doses of steroids in pregnancy and turned my basals up to 200% at some points to cope with the rise. I also increased my boluses by about 50% too. I found the effects lasted about 48 hours after the final dose, but I guess that may vary according to the type of steroids and the volume.

Thanks for all the advice at least i know what to expect x

Hi Tracy,
a consultant told me many years ago that for every 1 mg of Prednisolone (I'm assuming that's what you are on) you will need 2 units of insulin.
Over the years I have found the above to be spot on.
Best way to address the problem is up your basal and change your carb ratio, with corrections as needed. Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Tracy,
😱 at just taking todays dose. Have you not been told to take the steroid in the morning? It will seriously mess up your sleep pattern taking it in the evening.
Pred stays in your system for quite a few hours I know the effect lasts for about 12 with me. I take mine in the morning before breakfast, and blood sugars would be their highest at lunchtime except the pump does the job for me. As in that's my highest basal point.
All you can do though is to test, test, and keep testing. Your numbers wont go back to normal though for a few days or more after your last dose of steroids.

I took the first dose in a n e last night, they said take same time every day. Do they keep you awake? I was ok last night. Thank goodness only on them few days

I do hope the hunger side-effect doesn't get you too badly. Prednisolone makes me crave high-carb high-fat food, and the aching hunger can last a few days after the course ends. (I also need 40mg for 5 days occasionally for asthma, and always gain weight - but better fat than dead!)

Well finished and i really didnt like them! Yes i did feel bit hungry during the night but just ignored it. Did you put on weight from only 5 days course that is shocking
