I’ve not been on for a while as I was getting really anxious about it all and I have Mh issues anyway so needed a break.

I now have a meter and have after consultation with specialist been prescribed a low dose (40mg once a day - just to start with will be increased gradually, depending on bg meter results) of gliclazide ( I have meds allergies etc that had to be taken into account) which I’ve just collected from the pharmacy.

Pharmacist said (wasn’t on label or on pil that I could see so I asked) to take with food (breakfast)

I’m very anxious about starting it due to the other meds allergies I have. Also worried about side effects and also as I don’t have a routine with sleep and meal times - I’m guessing I will have to get this sorted?

I have managed to lose around half a stone since dx, bg is now down to around 12 fasting but cannot get it under the 10 the gp wanted. Consultant said based on blood results/genetics that there’s no way I’d have managed it with diet alone anyway. That I’ve done well to get the weight and bg down significantly already (maybe he’s just being nice though?)

So, those of you on this medication what would you advise on how to take and mealtimes and general lifestyle management please?

One thing that is a bit of a bummer is apparently can’t have alcohol on it? I’m not a big drinker but do enjoy a girls night out most weekends and that does involve a wee drink which helps me feel less self conscious.

Anyone else gone from having a bit of a chaotic lifestyle with sleep, mealtimes etc and can perhaps empathise and advise?

Thanks in advance.

Gliclazide isn’t known for having many side effects and fine to drink on it but test BG before bed if drinking especially if having more than one drink

Good to know re side effects and quite honestly alcohol too. I think I’m going to avoid drink totally initially see how I am on it.

Ironically today my bgs have not been bad at all! Still not under 10 but really close so I may only need a low dose anyway. (This is why he’s started me on a low dose I can have odd reactions to meds, some don’t touch me - mainly pain and anaesthetics - and others affect me way more than they do others - mainly antibiotics and steroids)

I've been on Gliclazide for around six months now with absolutely no side effects whatsoever but that's me, we are all different so perhaps I've been lucky. I was prescribed them because my pancreas wasn't producing enough insulin as I had had pancreatitis three times in the past. I previously was taking Metformin, now they did upset my stomach.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thank you, I’m hoping I take well to the gliclazide. That my bg comes under healthier control finally and that there are few if any side effects that I can manage

I took gliclazide for quite a while without any side affects whatever and when I stopped it because my DN thought my blood glucose levels were a bit too low, my blood glucose levels went up. Personally I would not worry at all @LucysLostSister, the chances of it doing you good are far, far higher than the chances of getting any side effects.

No side affects so far, I recently learned on here to take before food, on other meds and it comes with my breakfast meds, most of which have to take with food and they are all similar size , I don’t drink so cat advise on that sorry, hope you get on ok with it, lots of allergies here too to antibiotics and some bp meds.

I was on full dose for several years before my pancreas gave up. I had no side effects and rare to see any mentioned on the forums. Be careful with the dose as it does stimulate the pancreas to produce more insulin so can cause hypos hence the advice to start on a low dose which 40mg is.

Thanks for all the replies I have a hectic life so don’t often get on here though I am going to a local meet up on sat. I’ve been afraid to try it yet but my week a little calmer now so planning to start it tomorrow morning.

I really need for many health reasons & work reasons to have a healthier routine that works for me so kinda started that today with a new work challenge meaning an early start for me. Hope I can manage it I'm very nervous
