I spoke to my DSN today as my BG has been unusually high overall, something that is very odd for me, with the occasional very low BG in between. I am mainly high in the evenings and on waking. She is baffled by what could be causing it, seems to think it may be hormonal. I told her I was on domperidone but she said that would have the opposite effect so it's all very strange. I mentioned to her about testing for ketones and she said I don't need to test for ketones unless I have symptoms of feeling very unwell, does that sound right to you? I haven't tested for ketones before but bought some ketostix today to be on the safe side. Being this high (15+) makes me feel unwell anyway. I have to reduce my ratio to 1:1.5 then add 1 unit each time for now and see how it all goes.

Could you be brewing a bug maybe?... I was told you always test for ketones if in mid teens or above? There are some seriously nasty bugs around at the mo - I know a few other diabetic mums who are having a horrible time too...hope you feel better soon!

Thanks Twitchy! I hope I'm not coming down with a bug but it's I know it's possible, although this has been going on for a couple of weeks. Time will tell I guess.

Hi Newbs despite being on both domperidone and erythromycin the gastroparesis often causes my BGS to be high in the morning ie it can be 6 at 2am and then suddenly goes high at 3am as the evening food hits my intestines. Similarly unless my lunch is small it will cause BG spikes late afternoon/early evening. It is stated that gastroparesis requires extra injections to mitigate this problem hence why im usually injecting humalog at between 3am and 4 am and an extra dose at 3pm/4pm. My basal is fine - actually if I don't eat my basal is too high but I keep it that way to help with the impact of the digestion problems caused by the gastroparesis. Diabetes gastroparesis is a specialis subject. My diabetic consultant referred me to diabetes consultant who specialise in gastroparesis but is in a different PCT because he knows that it needs specialist care. Lovely as she is my GPs DSN knows absolutely nothing about the effects of gastroparesis.

Thanks Amanda, that info is good to know. I am hoping to speak to my diabetic consultant in more depth about it and ask for a definitive diagnosis at least but unfortunately my usual consultant has not been kept on due to finances so we are left with one main consultant to see everyone. Hence my October appt being nowhere in sight yet. My DSN knows nothing about gastroparesis other than that the domperidone is to help move the food along, she said that much herself. Sometimes it is so hard to get anywhere.
