Has anyone ever had a leaking needle?

I had a very high BG just now and when I went to my pen to give a correction dose, I noticed that it was wet. When I pressed in the plunger without taking off the top, liquid came out from under/side of the plastic at the base of the needle.

Aaaaaagh!

No except when I haven't put it on properly - X threaded sort of.

Are you sure it didn't leak because of the pressure exerted within the needle-case, ie if there wasn't room for X amount of insulin inside the little cap and you kept shoving the plunger - it would have to go somewhere and that must have been the weakest part of the whole ...

Is the whole box the same? - and how come didn't you notice it when you did your air shot?

Just thoughts ......

I know, maybe I'm clutching at straws the number of ups and downs I get! I only noticed when I looked in the pen box where there was some liquid (very small amount). Then I tested it as I said, and assumed I was right. I did adjust, but then monitored carefully and made sure it didn't go to low by eating a small amount which prevented a hypo.

Who knows, something else to make sure I look out for - thanks for your suggestions anyway

i had only twice a needle that was not working thats it and once a cracked cartidge for the junior novopen

It maybe that you need a new insulin pen..

When my Les had this pen it was because of the pen being knackered..

Change the cartridge to rule this out, if it still happens then get a new pen

Good point Ellie! Never thought of that, but it's certainly a possible.

In theory, the needle goes straight from inside the cartridge to the tip, so any leakage would have to be from the cartridge top or the needle has somehow ripped the rubber.

I've certainly never had it happen (although syringe/removable needle obviously has) so can't really suggest anything practical.

Intrigueing.

Rob

Are you leaving the needle on and re-using it? That can be a cause of leakage. Best to use a new needle each time.
