I first tasted this about 20 years ago in Greece and I've been returning for it ever since. There are many variations on the recipe and it's easy to adapt to personal taste. Here's our slant on the meal.

Ingredients : Tesco cooked prawns (or fresh if you want). Half tin chopped tomatoes + a couple of chopped fresh toms. One red onion finely chopped. Teaspoon chilli sauce. 2 cloves garlic chopped.2 tablespoons ouzo.1 table spoon dried parsley. Feta in small cubes. Pinch of paprika. Level teaspoon sugar or sugar subsitute to sweeten tomatoes. A little olive oil.

Saute onion and garlic in olive oil until soft.Soak prawns in ouzo. Add rest of ingredients apart from prawns, feta and ouzo and simmer for about 15 mins. Add prawns and ouzo (just some of it according to taste) for about 5 mins.
Place in bowl, add feta and either place under grill or pop into hot oven for a minute or two until feta starts to melt.

Ingredients are not critical. Fresh herbs might be nicer, but we've none at this time of year. Just taste and test the sauce as you go. Luckily we had a small bottle of ouzo left after our last holiday, as the ouzo certainly added something!! You can also use wine or brandy.

Skip the slices of crusty bread to avoid carbs!

Big fan of saganaki to so thanks for the Recipie. Have you tasted bourataki? Once tried you'll be hooked - they're absolutely delic. Prawns and cream cheese and some herbs in crisp filo pastry. Mmmmm

Keep the Ouzo - I hate and loathe anis.

However, if you've got any nice Raki, I'll soak my prawns in that, please!

Incidentally, it's the pan which is the Saganaki - we like cheese Saganaki (fried cheese) (not unlike baked Camembert, but fresher tasting) as one of our starters.

Yes Ouzo is indeed an acquired taste, you either love it or loath it. It does though seem to keep the mosquitos away - though maybe one doesn't notice the bites the same after a few glasses!!
Yep, knew about the pan, it's the diminutive of 'sagan' σαγάν a two handled frying pan. I enjoy saganaki cheese too, though not too sure how well it fits a diabetic diet, but fried in olive oil - well perhaps 🙂

Thanks for the suggestion, it's a new one for us to try. I've tried looking for a recipe on the www but nearest I can find is boureki made with zucchini, though i suppose prawns could be subsituted.

Cheese is 100% fine ! just being protein and fat, not that much lactose unless you eat a whole cheddar LOL - and as a starter it's served with a bit of salad anyway.

Don't be worrying about fats whatever it's fried in (within reason) - unless you are trying to lose weight of course.
