Keeping you up to date I have now sorted myself out!

This morning took a decision to take insulin again, not my gliclazide. I did 'take it easy' with bolusing today since I don't know how much the tablets build up and everything. Although I could have been slightly more brutal since I've got a dreaded cold! Another reason why I thought insulin will be in my favour.

So I gave the nurses a call regardless, was expecting them not to pick up so got a shock when she did! Ha. Briefly went over bloods, basically said that they are going up to the 20s and not much lower than 10. Not good! Well first she told me that gliclazide wouldn't sort out post-meal spikes... but that's what supposed MODYs are treated on and it is the main problem so I don't understand that.

She did ask if my Dr 'thought I was a T2 and not T1 on insulin' I said no he thinks i'm a MODY which apparently went over her head as she continued to advise me to try 80mg twice a day not 40mg (as it was), so I said I would try it in the morning first. Fair. Then she decided to lecture me that it is better to exercise and do more activities than it is to increase dose and to watch my weight and everything, asked how much I weigh and I said i'm about 8st5 =S But the point is i'm not doing a lot at the moment cause its the holidays i'm taking a break but then I do go out and it's proven to not be of that much help, besides if I can't get it down when i'm just sitting around what use is it to me in the long run?

I did get one thing out of it and that was asking to get a C-Peptide test which would show how much insulin I am making on my own. I think at the moment the wisest option is to continue insulin at least whilst i'm ill so that i actually get better then see what he says about c-pep. Might be worth waiting for those results I guess.

Sounds good to me Liz - I think when we have lived with it 24/7 we need to take charge when the HCPs approach doesn't seem to meet expectations. They are making assumptions of how the medications will work for you, but you are seeing the day-to-day results. You've done the right thing letting them know, and it does sound as though the nurse was a little out of her depth as far as MODY is concerned. I hope that you are able to keep decent levels with the insulin and that you feel better very soon 🙂 Keep doing plenty of tests - I always find judging dose changes difficult when recovering from an illness. Also, hope you don't have to wait too long for that C-peptide test! 🙂
