I was diagnosed last November with a Hb count of 116. Eyes went blurry, massive thirst etc. Anyway. I was prescribed 4 x 500 metformin daily which caused no end of "blaming the dog" if you know what I mean. 3 months later, Hb readings down to 53. And 6 months on, Hb readings now down to 43 and not taking ANY metformin now for a month.

All I did was to cut ALL sugar out of my diet. No fizzy pop (just diet now), no sugar in my tea (sweetner now), dropped most carbs (pasta seems to send it up more than anything else), and concentrated on meat, veg and salads mostly. No cake and no sweets.

I'm pretty sure I'll get it down to below 40 but I haven't really lost much weight (maybe a stone that's all)

So it's just a message to you Newbies - I cra**ed myself when I was diagnosed, but 6 months on, it's actually ok.

Great result RHS and I've basically done the same thing without medication. It does require a massive re-think and giving our heads a big shake to get rid of the carb habit but as you've shown, it's do'able and its soooo worth it! 🙂
 
It does...and it doesn't. As I said, when first diagnosed it was a massive blow to me. But, after the re-think really it was just to start being sensible. Right at the start I went on a massive diet and tried the Newcastle Uni study diet (600 calories of less) but that was a pain. I see many people on here who are confused, and worried like I was when first diagnosed, so I thought I would simply pass on the message that actually, it isn't that bad.....you caused it, and you can fix it (or at least help it on its way). And what really have I sacrificed? I drink Coke Zero now instead of full-sugar coke and yes, until I adjusted to the sweetners, it was a pain, but now, if I accidentally drink something sugary, it tastes like c**p.

That's great news, I'm really pleased your approach has worked out well for you 🙂 I suspect your genetic heritage had more to do with 'causing it', but you have found a way that you can manage it successfully, well done 🙂

Hi RHS. Well done. Being a T1 is totally different. T2 your pancreas may work 30% or 90%. Well done for being active in doing something positive & eating heathier.
 
Great result RHS, I like the aggressive approach to managing D.....

However....
you caused it, and you can fix it
I don't subscribe to this statement, T2 is in my genes. My Grandfather had it, my Brother has it & so do I. I would say that my family has a genetic predisposition to T2; all my nieces have been warned.
