Today I had a pub lunch, omelette, mushroom onion and a very small amount of cheese plus a good green salad - diet coke to drink - I often have this sort of thing for lunch ( not omelette that often but a jacket potato sort of thing)
When I returned home after a mooch around charity shops in the area I felt really bad... Shaky and very tired. I tested and I was 3.6 - very low for me. I had a banana, some water and went for a rest as I didn't feel good.

I tested again an hour later and I was 4.9

This is so unusual , any ideas why this may have happened please? It was warm today but that hasn't bothered me much to be honest.

It sounds as though your lunch was v low in carbs, if not carb free, that might have been the reason. Did you have any bread/potatoes etc.?

Hi Ann, there doesn't appear to be any carbs there. As you said you often have a jacket poatato, that is packed with carbs.
I hope you feel better this evening. Sheena

I agree with the others Ann, it sounds like your body was expecting some carbs and didn't get them. When this happens, your body has to convert fat and protein to provide energy - this can not only keep your levels low, but it can also be a difficult process when your body is unused to it (you say you normally have some carbs like a jacket potato). It's similar to when a marathon runner 'hits the wall', when his/her ready source of energy in the form of carbs/glucose stored by the muscles and liver is exhausted.

So, this is probably why you felt unwell - like you've just run a marathon! 😱

Also what would have meant your hypo symptoms lasted longer, is the banana as this is a slow adsorbing carb as well slower when it's greener..

If you get a low hypo reading, you find that you will recover from the symptoms a lot quicker if you treat it with a fast acting carb, such as a jelly baby or two, boiled sweet type thing..

The banana would have held your hypo level for longer before it starting returning the blood glucose back to it's normal lever above 4mmol/l

When treating this way do be carefull you don't shoot your BG the other way though

Thank you very much all of you, that sounds absolutely right as I do usually have a potato or a sandwich for lunch. It's a relief to know as it was quite alarming to be honest.

Thanks for the info on the banana too, I don't usually have low readings, usually they go a bit high ( fortunately recently not over 9 ) so it was a new experience.

I knew you would all have the answer !!

🙂
