Hi all,
Sorry I know that i've posted about this very dastardly sore throat twice now lol. I went to the DSN today (who is just beyond lovely) and she put all of my basals up. And said to keep on with what I was doing. Just had a ketone check now and they're 1.7. bsl is around the 16 mark today. Was just wondering if anyone does extra insulin on top of correction with ketones or what occurs? Thanks very much in advance.

I hope you are feeling better.

Hi eyeko, you need to have a temp basal running as well as corrections going.
You have a feature on your pump which tells you how much insulin you have on board. This will calculate what insulin to give once you have told your pump what your blood sugar is.
Make sure you drink plenty of water too.
IMHO an ordinary sore throat would not cause blood sugars to go as high as yours have.
Do you think it would be a good idea to see a Doctor so s/he can advise on the action needed to get rid of it.
Hope you feel better soon.

Sue

I think I've got a similar virus to you, sore throat bit of a cold but it's not been bad enough for me to go off work sick. My blood sugars were unaffected until today, just tested and up to 16.2 so just about to do a correction.
If your ketones are high then you need more insulin, your DSN should advise to increase your basal rates. Your correction factor might be less effective when you are ill because you might get some insulin resistance.
hope you feel better soon

Just wondering if people generally wait the 4 hours before doing another correction? I am just coming up to 4 hours post correction, I was 16.2 and i'm now at 22.6, blood ketones are 0.0 so thats good. feeling quite nauseous now, i don't like being high like this as I'm not used to it.

Hullo! Sorry to see you are so high - have been reading all posts as they come through - but had a manic thursday/friday!
I usually wait 2 hours as I can see then whether they are beginning to come down in the right direction - if they are I will wait a further 2 - if not I will give my self another shot. I think after 2 hours you can tell which direction tehy are heading - but as always - it is different for everyone!

I see mine go high quite alot so it doesnt effect me that much :( If I wasn't having my evening meal for a while I would take a bit more insulin.

I remember before I would have felt ok with these levels, when I was running higher and my A1c was over 9 😱 I have found out my old diary (when I was good at keeping one!) here is a typical day

before breakfast 11.8
before lunch 12.7
after lunch 23.2
before tea 25.0
after tea HI
before bed 27.4

at this time I would have felt ok because i was used to these levels. I think that once you get your numbers down being higher feels bad because you aren't used to it.

I think I will eat my dinner now and correct at the same time. might need to also look at my correction factor as well as it was calculated when I was using half the amount of insulin I am using now.

I don't like diabetes today :(

p.s. sorry Eyeko have hijacked your thread posting my problems
