Natural to be overwhelmed, it is a lot to take in, especially with a hospital admission. You and he will be ok. Be gentle with yourself and take it one step a time. It does get easier, and there are lots of people on here who have experience to share, so ask questions as you need to and look after yourself. Sending you the very best.

Sorry to hear that @alfiemoon It’s overwhelming to start with and there’s a lot of practical stuff thrown at you, but that does all become easier and more routine. There’s a great book about Type 1 if you’re interested. It’s a book to dip into over time, not one to read and memorise!:

Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas

Ask anything you want here. Nothing is too trivial or ‘silly’.

Hi and welcome. It’s very normal to be overwhelmed and you will be dealing with a lot of information over the coming weeks. We felt very well supported by our paeds team when my kid was diagnosed and had lots of help in the first few weeks and months. And they repeat it all a lot so don’t worry if information doesn’t stick the first time.

We’re here to support you emotionally as well as to help with any questions you might have

Hi @alfiemoon and welcome to the forum

Glad that you have found us so quickly. The forum is a great place to ask questions, so feel free to ask as many questions as you like

A new diagnosis can be overwhelming with so much new information but as @Saoirse said it does get easier

But glad to hear that your son is handling it well

If you would like to speak to someone for some emotional support, our helpline advisors are around Mon-Fri between 9 am- 6 pm. They can be contacted on 0345 123 2399.

Welcome to the forum @alfiemoon

Sorry to hear about your son’s diagnosis, but glad you have found us.

We have lots of experienced parents, plus others going through the same tricky early weeks and months as you, along with those who can look back and recall their own diagnosis in childhood (or later!) and how it affected them.

Fire away with any questions you may have, or simply offload and vent among folks who instinctively ‘get it’.
