social events/buffet hell

newly dignised type 1 had my first real social event my neices christaning and a buffet i ended up not eat much anyone had the same problem
 
Social events can be tricky. However, in some ways, buffets are easier than sit down meals where food is brought in fixed portions. With a buffet, you can select what and how much to eat, and then inject afterwards. Note that it's best not to inject afterwards for every meal, but it's safer when you don't know what will be available to eat and when.
What food was available, and what did you choose?
 
I always have dextrose tablets on me because I don't like that situation either. 🙂
 
I know the feeling! Ten years down the line since diagnosis, I've worked out a strategy. I try and eyeball what's on offer, decide what I'm going to have, help myself to one plateful (and stick to meat, salad, a bit of bread and butter because it's an easily guessable amount of carb) and inject for that plateful. The thing I have to avoid doing is picking at bits of pork pie, quiche, etc, when you've no idea how many carbs are in them, and no idea how much you're actually eating.
Actually, the worst thing I find, come to think of it, is being involved in the clearing up. It's so easy to pinch the last bit of pie, quiche, sausage roll etc from a plate as you're sorting stuff for putting away or chucking out.
 
I find buffets too tempting but the last one I went to was so beige and carb laden I gave up and ate the cheese and a few pickled onions. Seafood is a good option but I won’t have it if I don’t know how long it’s been out.
 
I avoid buffets, because I have problems from two sides now, the fact that I am a pescatarian and now a diabetic. I too would avoid seafood in such a situation too, because it is very hard to know how fresh it is. I do not do dairy either.
 
I don't see the prob really TBH. I may well not be able to eat a slice of pork pie - but nobody ever forced me to eat the pastry - same with sausage rolls (except I will be tempted there cos I adore flaky pastry) Any salad is fine, and I can pick the meat off as many rolls and out of as many wraps as I like. If forks are provided one can pick a quiche dry quite easily!
 
It can be tricky to get doses just right, but that will come with time and experience. At a buffet, I eat what I like and guess my dose and do a few extra blood tests about two hours after eating so that I can correct if I need to.
 
Yes I find it difficult too, at the moment I just stab (I mean inject!) as I go and hope for the best! I keep an eye on blood sugar afterwards, as I don't know how to carb count yet, and know where the sweets are just in case 🙂
