Sausage Roll
per 100gper portion (103g)
Energy kcal319 kcal329 kcal
Fat21 g22 g
of which Saturates12 g12 g
Carbohydrate23 g24 g

Just look at the cals is it really worth getting upset about it let alone the carbs and c**p in it ?
The calories are worse for me, but that's fat. Saturated fat kills me on cholesterol. But again, I'd balance that on the fact it's a Gregg's.

How many carbs do you normally load into your dinner?
Usually 25gm, but maybe twice a week I will have up to 30gm as I have a dessert.
I am really unlucky when it comes to eating carbs, but I had decades of telling my GP that I can't eat carbs and being informed that could not possibly true as carbs are so beneficial to the whole of humanity and should be eaten at every meal.
I got down to Hba1c of 41 eating 50 gm of carbs a day, but it did not go lower - it increased to 42. I reduced carbs to 40 gm a day, and it still did not go down. I think the needle is stuck.

Slice of pizza, cauli mash, with cheese, and a dollop of cream stirred in, a few thick slices of fatty bacon?
Still under your limit.

Steak, mushrooms, sweet pepper, onion, courgette, served on a bed of roasted cabbage, with asparagus and a side salad of beetroot, radish, red lettuce and tomatoes with an oil and red wine vinegar dressing.

Maybe need to start a separate thread, if that sort of low carb is still keeping you in the pre diabetic range?

I was at Hba1c of 41 at 6 months (2017) and then 42 annually after that - though during Covid I have been rather left to my own devices other than eyesight check, which was normal.

I can understand your frustration if the HbA1C needle is stuck as you describe @Drummer I can see from your signature that you’ve lost 50lb in weight. Do you have more weight to lose? Could that be the issue?

A whole lot of calories, sat fats, sodium. Meagre micronutrients, no fibre.

Sorry, but I'm taking the nutrition-Nazi position: it's crazy to think of something like this as a "treat". Taxing Greggs into oblivion would be a win in the war against obesity and metabolic disorders.

I like them
But I don't disagree.
For me though, an odds Greggs occasionally has to be a lot better than the family box of donuts I used to get from Tescos.
And, I'll buy the one, I won't buy the three for the price of two offer, and I'll eat it while I'm out, so I'm ok including it in my diet as a meal with a coffee.

Instead I'm eating so good I never spike but everything is so bland and tastless
Personally I think potatoes, rice and pasta are bland and tasteless whereas the things we eat with the starches are full of flavour. I have never thought "I really fancy some rice so I better cook a curry to go with it" 🙂 and with no rice on the plate there is space for MORE curry....

Apart from rice being a low cost filler, and we are very fortunate we can fund a lifestyle that gives us options to bypass the cheap end of the food market....
But as to eating just a plate full of curry.

We had dinner out with friends on Saturday.
Saffron rice,
samosas
onion bhajis
naan bread
poppadums
lentil and aubergine curry
prawn curry
paneer curry
lamb kebabs

Mango cheesecake

all homemade,
All important parts of the meal.
I'm not saying you have to load your plate up with everything, but it all adds to the mix.

I rarely ate pasta before though, and don't eat it as home now.
But I will put a bit of rice on with a curry, some one pot curries the rice goes in with the curry.

I know exactly how you feel. I wish I had joined this forum a long time ago. I have learned so much about how I should be monitoring my carbs in my food which I haven’t before now as I felt if I ate a balanced diet with occasional treats I would be fine and I was for a long time. And to be honest my occasional treats became too regular. I really have to get a grip of myself and truly admit that I cannot eat as I do now expecting my diabetic medication to do all the work to lower my BG when the reality is I have to take responsibility for what I put in my my body. My BG levels are just too high now averaging 12.9. I only have myself to blame. My meds changed recently as I became intolerant of Metformin.
I want to be here for a long time with no fear of any side serious affects uncontrolled Diabetis can have in my life. I need to face the fact I am a Diabetic and accept my life choices especially with food needs to change now.
Today I am staring a ‘Honest’ list which another member of this forum advised of everything I put into my body and find out the carbs I am eating and then take action to do what I need to do to reduce it. I know the count will be high.
My next appointment with DN for my annual diabetic assessment until July and also to discuss my new meds and how affective they are.

This seems a very sensible approach and hopefully you will find a way forward which you can maintain. Looking at the thread What did you eat Yesterday might give you some ideas for the fabulous sounding tasty meals people have. Take note of whether they are Type 2 as type 1 meals may well be higher in carbs than you can tolerate depending on your meds.
