I have never eaten a Greg's anything, never had a Subway, nor an Oreo - my maternal family is Type two Central and always ate low carb at home from about 1900. Most of my blood relatives lived to a grand old age.
If you yearn for sausage rolls you could make some yourself, using 'Fat Head' pizza dough for the pastry and some good sausages or sausage meat as the filling. It would mean taking them with you, but those who eat them say they are very good - I don't eat Pizza or sausage rolls.

You must feel there is no justice then in becoming diabetic.

I have never been able to cope with carbohydrate even as a child - but the 'healthy' diet is stuffed full of starch and 'natural' sugars.
Blaming processed foods is not logical (yes, I am raising one eyebrow) because there are carbs in brown grains, beans and fruit - and it is all carbs which raise blood glucose, they don't get a free pass for not being processed and packaged.

Well mea culpa because I can certainly cook from fresh and do - but Oooh yes, the occasional sausage roll or steak bake from Greggs has been known to find its way into my tummy - and I've enjoyed them, thanks. I don't have any trouble whatever avoiding stuff like doughnuts, Belgian buns etc in there. Not my faves ever. Mostly, too much of a queue in there locally, to bother TBH.

Because my daughter had one when we were uptown for lunch and that would be a treat now and again when we went shopping. Would get a sausage roll and eat it picnic style in the town centre together. Just reminded me again that all my food freedoms have gone. I know I could have picked a sarnie at Gregg's but I restrained myself and ate lunch at home. I hate thinking about every crumb that goes in my mouth

I'm just mourning my new life. 3 weeks in and it's not getting any easier. Hubby made a good point today that I might be helping make sure I live longer but what's the point if I'm miserable. I just cant get a balance as everything I want to eat is bad for me. Instead I'm eating so good I never spike but everything is so bland and tastless
Every now and then I buy a vegan sausage roll from Greggs but only eat half of it. It is yummy.

Bland and tasteless?
Try cauliflower cheese with a spice such as paprika sprinkled on a layer of cream cheese over steamed cauliflower, then add grated cheese - I like Red Leicester, and you can add blue cheese for added impact. Use a warm dish and replace it in a warm oven so the cheese becomes very lightly golden tanned.
Make a curry from low carb ingredients and serve it over chopped cauliflower or mashed swede.
Try a dessert of sugar free jelly and berries with yoghurt, or whip the yoghurt into the jelly when it is just thickening and serve with cream.
Stirfries with sausages, steak with mushrooms, salad with herbs mixed into an oil and vinegar dressing, flavoured mayonnaise - beef stews with a little aromatic curry powder mixed in, home made low carb crackers with cheese, a cheese waffle with a rasher of thick cut bacon, tiny dark chocolate cups with creamy filling set with gelatine, and a fresh strawberry on top.
Then there is chicken -
Honestly, bland and tasteless it really is not.

Goals and treats work best for me. I work out the meal plan each day, varying it as much as I want as long as I keep to within various limits, like no more than 125g of carbohydrates in the day (preferably < 100g) and no more than 30g carbohydrates in any one meal.

But occasionally I do have treats and look upon them as a test to see what effect (if any) there is on my blood glucose levels. Any bad response will see me adjust my approach to that treat, either reduction or elimination.

For example I really went to town yesterday. It was sunny but cold. We went to the beach and had fish and chips AND an ice cream. Bang. Huge number of carbs. Nearly half the days worth. Testing some hours later 5.4. So it hadn't wrecked things but it forced me to readjust the meal plan for the afternoon/evening.

We had a great time. And I enjoyed the food.

I am not suggesting that you do what I did. I took a big risk in the name of 'science' to see if the big blip in food would mess things up. It didn't. But I know that other things do, like bread, so I cannot eat sandwiches much. Not eliminated just much reduced.

So, go treat youself occasionally and just check if the treat mucks things up and adjust if you have to.

For me diabetes has opened an entirely new world of new possibilities and of better health. I feel great, so its not all doom and gloom. Yes, there are new 'rules' and strategies. Its a challenge and a new way of thinking. Thats the biggie we have to learn who we are and each person is different in what we can eat/tolerate. As they say here, 'its a journey not a destination nor a race'.

It would be nice not to have to bother 24/7 but the cost to me before diagnosis was much poorer health and an increasingly debilitated life.

If you can see the possible up sides (yes there are some) then it will help you get going and keep going.

One interesting point. I am a very fussy eater and yet my diet now is much more interesting and varied than it used to be. Its just different.

I hope you feel better and can see a good way forwards. Good luck.

It might have been the routine or tradition that you were missing more than the sossie roll. Make a new tradition, find something in Greggs that isn't so fatty and carby maybe? Mind you, a hot sossie roll, mmm. I can see the allure. There must be something else you can have in there? I'm with you on the crying, I still haven't got my head around it all, being type 2 sucks.

It sure does suck

Even though I'm type 1 so slightly different even though I watch the carb intake as well.
As a youngster I desperately wanted to have a mars bar, so mum bless her showed me the carb values of a mars bar and a roast dinner then asked which I would rather have.

I could have one or the other not both, being young I chose the mars bar (didn't even like it) So I missed my roast dinner that day :( Mum made sure I had carb free on my plate though.

So the lesson I learnt that day was 1 choose wisely and 2 there's always a compromise to be made.
So if you think the sausage roll was to many carbs to have then knock it off your lunch or the rest of the day's meals.

There's more than one way to skin a cat so the saying goes.
Even after 56 years of having diabetes I can honestly say I have never missed out on anything food wise.

That was my favourite expression, some thought it cruel to cats.
I particularly applied it to students who embarked on a Uni degree course which really was not for them but by finding another way would fulfil their ambitions eventually.
I think of my daughter who desperately wanted to be a pharmacist but the Uni course just didn't suit her but by doing a Boots training for dispensing technicians she progressed and found her niche and now manages the dispensary at a large hospital.

They are. Proper sausage meat and flaky pastry. A close second in the local sausage roll "hall of fame" is an independent butchers in a nearby town that does flaky and short crust pastry.
Well ,they do know a thing or two about pork sausages in Lincolnshire ,as well As other porcine products, stuffed chine of pork anyone?

Now this is me not anyone else.
I found the food I craved but could not have were more to do with the way I ate before and my mental health it was always a treat and very briefly made me feel better, yes I could eat a massive sausage roll now because lets be honest they are tasty but it just does not bother me anymore, last night I had a massive steak with veg and I have found my taste buds are much more sensitive eating low carb so food I hated I can now taste. Lunch I can have doorstep keto sandwich with mayo and chicken or ham with nuts what's not to like.

We keep saying this - it really would be lovely to have either an independent butcher or a local greengrocers. Need to go approx 15 miles hence to find one - long way to go 'on spec' really. There is one nearer so say half an hour there and back without the 'browse' but they only do a fortnightly pre ordered veg box that you can't choose the contents. Same sort of distance (15 miles) for a proper butcher.

Cry no more, have one when out & about, hardly carb heavy & walking should reduce bg.

Gregg's sausage rolls are really nice, often have one on travels, steak bakes also tasty.

This is what I need to work on. I'm a perfectionist and very black and white so to me it's all or nothing and I cant live like that with diabetes. I think I'm going to have to accept the spikes this week and try some new foods out

Sorry to hear about your sausage roll tears @Jo121

Hope you feel able to have one next time after the responses you’ve read here.

And hope you can begin to experiment a little more with new foods and add a few things to your menu that aren’t bland or tasteless, and which feed your soul as well as your body.

Perfection isn’t possible with diabetes. It’s all about striking a balance, and living well with the condition, not feeling boxed-in by it. 🙂

And I've never walked past a Festive Bake.

I still have one in my freezer.

And, for low carbing, (without checking this exact one, a slice is around 18g to 30g. (Different sizes, and different toppings are available) If you don't eat the crust, (even I don't nowadays) it's even less. And on this, the little pastry circles don't do much either.

Sausage rolls.
I make my own.
Pork mince, and an assortment of herbs, spices, and cheese.
I'm not a fan of sausage meat, even one without fillers.
Flaky pastry, one roll makes nine sausage rolls.
20g of carbs in the pastry per sausage roll.

So even though I avoid saturated fats, some days you just have to.

So one slice of pizza, or my dinner?
I think I know which one I will be going for.
