Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hey, i'm Chris. Was diagnosed 2 days ago however still unsure as to which type. Being treated with tablets at the minute with insulin just in case. How quickly have people noticed their blood glucose levels drop on tablets alone? Mine dropped overnight but are back up again now. I've cut sugar out of my tea etc and i've been eating healthy but high levels again. Any insights?

Welcome Chris,

Individual results are sometimes rather discouraging, instead look at the trend for say your Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG)..... BG levels falling gradually are best, to much in to short a time will produce stress on the body.

Another thing to consider is cutting or reducing carb sources such as Bread, rice, pasta, cereals & starchy vegetables, replacing them with green leafy vegetables instead

Thanks for that. I've just seen somebody else posted they were averaging 22-29 2 weeks ago which is around where i am, and now they're down to 12. They've doubled my dose of Gliclazide already so may see improvements over the weekend

Hi Chris.
A warm welcome yeah I mean myself when I was diagnosed had numbers in the 20s not saying I still don't get them these days but diabetes sometimes is a constant battle especially when your newly diagnosed. Keep your chin up and glad you've found this forum so soon

They've doubled my dose of Gliclazide already
Watch out for false hypos, carry some glucose tablets or jelly belly's, this drug works by stimulating the pancreas to secrete insulin but in an uncontrolled fashion.

Welcome Chris, I'm a newbie as well but must say that you will find heaps of tips and advice on here it's helped me a lot.

Hi Chris and welcome. I found that gliclazide and dietary adjustments (no refined sugars and the standard NHS/NICE diet) did lower my BS, but it took a couple of months and I was up in double figures for quite a while. Even though by BS readings fell, they didn't fall far enough to satisfy me so I cut out most high carbohydrate foods and adopted a LCHF (low carb, high fat diet) and found that this really did push my BS down to a much better level.
The first graph below shows my first couple of months after diagnosis - it took a while for BS to fall. The second, a year later shows how my LCHF diet helped reduce my BS to lower levels.

You'll soon get control. I'm barely 4 months in and know I've had to make changes for life but surprising how you adapt. I miss having a piece of cake with a cup of tea or a hot butter scone but at least I didn't have to give up my wine. I found giving up my old portions of potato, rice and bread quite easy. I miss pasta most. I've had a slice of birthday cake in my fridge from my great nephews party last Saturday. I have a little piece each day and reckon enough for another 2 days but it's getting a bit dry! Pre D I could never have stretched a slice of cake out for a week!

Thanks everyone. As you all know its a complete mind blower when you're first diagnosed. So many different opinions on whats right and wrong. But as one nurse told me, every body is different and reacts in different ways, just got to work out which is best for me. I'll try one route and if that doesnt help i'll try another. You've put my mind at ease about my BS levels though. Many thanks!

Welcome, Chris. That's good advice from that nurse. Unfortunately some of the medical profession don't seem to think that we are all different, & give us all a standard diet sheet & send us on our way.

I'm fortunate enough to be close by to the new diabetes centre in Leicester which is run by Dr Jackson, who apparently is one of the top diabetes doctors in the UK. I'm sure if this diet doesn't work they'll point me in the right direction. This form & site is proving to help no end already 🙂
