Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone... warning this may be a little long winded but really need some help ... so I was formerly diagnosed with type 2 5 years ago after having gestational diabetes.. my results have always been around the 56 mark .. I was on metformin 1000mg daily .. upto last August when I was prescribed Victosa which I took everyday 1.2mls along with my metformin ... so my reading at my review 3 months ago was 41 .. Doctor reviewed and knocked off 1 metformin ... continued with weight loss ... now at 5 stone lighter my results this time was 37 or 5.5 ... we are all so pleased I was taken off medication and they said to continue to follow my new healthy eating plan ( slimming world) ... but the trouble is now my sugars are running low ...something I haven’t had to deal with before .. I am told this should correct it’s self over the coming days and that it could be the victosa coming out of my system but I am so worried I am finger testing every couple of hours getting myself all worked up ,. When really I said be over the moon ... the thing I am struggling with is food .. what should I be eating and avoiding to keep my sugars level sorry told you it was a little long

Hi Kazza, how low are your blood glucose levels?

Running around 4.1 upto 5 but on 3 occasion dropped as low as 3.1 ..

That is low. I sure some of the T1's, who have to deal with that sort of thing more often, will come along with some thoughts.

My lowest always seems to be before tea time ? I always have a good lunch .. well I think they are my morning results are usually between 4.1 and 4.5

What about the low 3's Benny G. Shouldn't they be avoided?

I wouldn't stress about it. Just keep testing from time to time & if you keep seeing reads in the low 3's, talk to yr doc about it, I would say.

Apart from that, it looks brilliant. Some people say they feel better in the 5's than the 4's, but not me. I definitely feel fitter and "lighter" in the low 4's, if you know what I mean.

Are you eating enough fat to be able to use it as fuel?
That could be why your glucose levels are dropping - it is a convenient source of energy and a 'quick fix' but fat is a far more available back up if you are a type two.
I know it is contrary to everything we are told, but I see people flagging after a two hour practice at the point their blood glucose levels are getting low. They are all reaching for their energy drinks or eating carbs to replenish.
I found the side effects of Metformin - which were dreadful for me, did not go away until long after I stopped taking the tablets, so you might not be reacting normally yet - and you have the diet as well. I will always be eating low carb to keep my diabetes at bay, but if you are doing a 'normal' weightloss diet, that might be adding in carbs and stopping you burning fat.
As you can test you will probably start to see a pattern as you get into this new phase a little more.

Thanks everyone.., seem a little better today .. not dropped below 4 so feel a little happier about that ... is it true that we should be around 5 or above to drive?

No.

Depends if you on medication that can cause hypos, such as insulin. (I'm not, and don't drive.) If you are, then you've to have tested within two hours of driving, and be 5 and above.

Thanks for your reply .. I am no longer on any medication.. was taken off on Tuesday due to two hba1c being 37 .. Doctor feels the couple of occasions my blood sugar has dropped below 4 is reactive and should settle once medication is out of my system.

Excellent - looks like you're sorted!

Sorry to jump in but did you lose your weight on Slimming World. Did you find it suited you as a type 2? I want to join but see so much conflicting information about it not being for diabetics etc. Any advice would be great thanks

Hi Karen .. you no what this is the first time I have been part of a diabetic forum and never felt I needed it before .. so I was so shocked when I saw all the conflicting information on here .. I have lost 5 stone since last August doing the slimming world eating plan .. I have never had an issue with anything.. my blood levels have decreased so significantly that I have now been taken off all medication... so all I can say is give it a try and you can adapt the plan to your lifestyle.. always consult your gp of you have any concerns but may doctors and nurses have told me to continue doing what I have been doing .. hope this helps x

If you've lost 5 stone and you can keep it off, it worked! (And congratulations!)

For many T2D's, really the most important thing is simply to lose weight. Pfaffing around with carbs is distinctly second-order.

I feel my diet is varied I have carbs and protein.. it’s seems to be doing the job for me so happy days
