I'm totally confused, I saw a list of 7 superfoods for diabetics which included sweet potatos and oats, so many contradictions on whats good and bad for us poor sufferers
 
Not really - there is nonsensical advice, and then there is low carb - some type ones even benefit from lower levels of carbs in the diet, but of course it is not essential for them
Type twos on insulin seem to benefit, from what I have read, if their pancreas is still working, to go lower carb, and the lucky type two who can go low carb and not require medication to see normal readings is not going to want to blow that by eating high carb foods.
I am of course totally biased as I started eating low carb and benefiting from it about 45 years ago.
Sweet potatoes are higher in carbs than ordinary ones - oats are a grain and automatically high carb.
Don't be a poor sufferer - get a meter, check what you can and can't eat and drag down your numbers.
I am almost 3 years from diagnosis and have a whole new lease of life. I was out 8 nights in a row a week or so ago.

I think not only is it complex it also will vary for each of us.
'Good food with carbs' as I understand help the body being less insulin resistant. But I suspect if you keep your BG (blood glucose) too high for too long then that good effect may not counter the bad effect to high insulin levels.
I think monitoring your BG can help you understand how your body deals and I am sure as you make changes how food effects you will also change.
 
I agree with the others, @Bob700, if you haven't got a meter then it would be good to get one. I discovered that sweet potatoes were worse for me than ordinary spuds, but I wouldn't have known without testing. The cheapest is the SD Codefree, from Amazon or direct from Home Health who will take off the VAT for diabetics (sorry, I can't get the link to work at the moment).

When I was first diagnosed I was given some diet sheets which advised eating starchy carbs at every meal, ie jacket potatoes, bread, rice, etc etc - things have improved at my surgery since then!
