Are walnuts; brazil nuts; unsalted peanuts good for you or not. I know they are high in fat but is that good or bad fat....

Apart from oat-cakes or fruit, don't know what else to snack on, if I need to....

Amanda x 🙂

As far as I know Amanda, the nuts you listed are all good fat (polyunsaturated and monounsaturated) and are fine in moderation.

As with anything else, it's all calories and will add up if you eat them by the handful but in measured amounts, I think they're considered one of the best things to snack on.🙂

Walnuts are supposed to be particularly good for you 🙂 As Rob says, the only downside is the calories, but I find eating a few nuts suppresses my desire for sweet things 🙂

I take nuts every day to work but because i am trying to lose weight I only take a very small amount (15g) to watch my calorie intake but yes, they are very good for you. I have walnuts and brazils and i tend to have them after i've been to the gym at lunchtime as it is recommended to have a little protein after a workout to repair muscles.

My wife was reading a magazine whilst waiting in the doctors surgery last week, there was a list of foods which are said to be beneficial to diabetics, top of the list was walnuts as it said they were good at reducing cholesterol and insulin resistance.

Just to illustrate the problem, I've got in front of me 2 small 'nibble' boxes of nuts prepared for me by my ever wonderful partner and each contains 50g of nuts, which is about 2 or 3 handfuls that you might reasonably grab from a bag.

Each pot is approx 5g of carbs, so ideal for carefree grazing. 🙂

BUT one pot equates to 300 calories and the other to 330. 😱

It's about the same as a small meal (2 slices of toast and an egg - ish)

I would need to walk at 4mph (brisk, aerobic) for about an hour to burn each of those off.

Now I know that, I may go and do something energetic before I tuck in or I may never do it !🙄

Rob

I must be terrible as I consume somewhere between 100g to 150g of nuts most days! 😱

Of course you will all throw tomatoes at me as I'm currently less then my personal target weight (again) :D.

Oh, all nuts are sources of good fats, plus they tend to have a lot of other nutrients in them.

If your under your target weight then why not Mark 🙂

That's the main reason I have done the pots for Rob.

It is scary though how the calories add up. An opened bag can prove fatal I'm sure, hence me buying the little pots. I top up the pot then hide the bag :D

Sarah 🙂

Here's another who likes his nuts. Not too keen on walnuts but almonds and hazlenuts the best, cashews and pistachios too. They are probably the biggest source of my calories.

Lindale Lass bought me a bag with dried fruit mixed with nuts last week. I've eaten all the nuts and left the raisins etc. as I'm not sure if they are bad for me on the sugar front.

I've noticed in recent years the trick of offloading old battered and bruised stock in mixed nut selections at Christmas by the supermarkets.

I find almonds (roasted for 15 min in oven @150C) very handy & tasty.
Have some walnuts knocking, ( tried them once - suspect they were gluten contaminated )

Wonder if http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3138/2 is correct .... lots of figures for sure !

Anyone tried hazelnuts ? ( http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3116/2 )

Those figures look to be right Bolddog. Healthy but VERY fattening if you're not careful !🙂

You're right to worry about the raisins. They're like rocket fuel, as are most dried fruits. They're reccomended by Ray Mears to take trekking because they're such a good source of concentrated high GI carbs. So probably not good for nibbling on watching telly. I really loved them until I found out how bad they were. Typical.🙄

Hi Amanda,
The information on nuts on my website The Diabetic Coeliac may be helpful, actually check out all the food comparisons, breakfast cereals, GF flours, fruit (inc) berries, raw veg, seeds, nuts, there are no entries as yet for yogurts and desserts.
