It's about time they banned it. Either that, or (and although it's considered a price inelastic product) if they put the price up to £50 a packet people would soon stop.

Hi Matt..I know just how you feel because I think they should ban Bicycles then there would be no accidents with cyclists riding on footpaths and pavements, but there again I would not criticise people that smoke because it's their choice as is people that ride bikes eh!! That would be double standards..😱😉

Personally, on the bike I follow the highway code and rules of the road, stopping at red lights etc which is more than a lot of the cars I see. (I'm not anti car as I'm a driver as well). I agree people shouldn't ride on pavements but I'm not sure how many accidents have actually been caused by people doing this. The issue with smoking is the cost to society. If people wish to smoke, yes it's their choice but why should the NHS then pour millions into courses to try and help them to stop? Most people I know who smoke want to stop. Ban it and problem solved.

I ocasionally have a small cigar as I enjoy one every now and then.
I won't berate you Austin Mini, my dad enjoyed a cigar or 2 each Christmas, before that he was a pipe smoker from a young man til he had a lung embolism in his late 70's, doctor said stop or else, so he did🙂 Take care

I gave up 5 weeks ago and now vaping my Dr recommended me to vape.

I quit the day I found out I was pregnant.... probably not something I'd recommend people do just to quit tho 🙂

Good luck. I think it basically comes down to being ready. When you are you'll do it. I'm sure you'll manage it.

I stopped smoking just over 10 years ago, did it cold turkey, but must confess it was the NHS that did it . I was unwell and my Doctor called an ambulance sent me into hospital from the surgery, there I was hooked up to about 4 drips and diagnosed with diabetes, I was like that for 10 days unable to go have a smoke anywhere, so decided to give up smoking and never smoked since that day, no help, no chemicals no gum no patches. was proud of myself having smoked 40 per day for 60 years.🙂
Well done ukjohn but what an awful experience in the run up to quitting eh? Take care

@ukjohn. Thats quite some story ukjohn and i reiterate my words from my previous post. Unfortunately (when I was still smoking) I was admitted to hospital a few times...and during each stay, smoking never entered my mind. Each stay was anything from 5days - 21days. But, as soon as I was discharged & went home to familiar surroundings, ashtrays, nicotine stained decor & smelly clothes. I started smoking again! Oh it was great to light up a fag & inhale the nicotine smoke, fool that I was 😱

I should have seized the opportunity but instead i shunned its face. The devil caught up with me in later life & I nearly lost my life through smoking. I never smoked one cigarette thereafter but i frequently wonder, since being dx Type 2 last year if my long smoking habit ultimately lead to my becoming diabetic? Who knows?

My story: 'READ THIS IF YOU WANT TO QUIT SMOKING CIGARETTES' is in General messageboard

I gave up last year after 30 years plus smoking,DSN kept saying I haven't seen an old type 1 smoker every time I went to see him. So I eventually gave up. Went on to vape with nicotine in it,Then week after week came down on the nicotine till zero, then thought to myself why am I vaping ( you carry more around with you, than a smoker. Fags and lighter, Vape machine, liquids, coils, battery charger, wicks lol,So I ditched it all and so far a year later.Still smoke free..Good Luck

I couldn't laugh at one time without coughing! I reckon your carbon monoxide level has reduced drastically by now :D

I vape, but the damn thing keeps leaking. Wasn't a cheap one either. I keep taking it apart & cleaning it, but it seems to leak through the air holes.

I'd take it or send it back Mark, no good if it leaks😳 worth a try.

I used to deliberately walk behind people who were smoking in the street, so I could get a bit of a second-hand whiff 😱 But that wore off after a while, and now I really don't like anyone smoking anywhere near me - sometimes hold my breath if I'm passing someone smoking when out on a run! 😱 🙂 Hard to imagine that I was still smoking for 12 years whilst running marathons and half marathons - there used to be a smoker's spot at most marathons where the runners would be having their last ciggy before the start 😱 However, the difference it made to my running was quite astonishing - I found I could breathe properly! 🙂

I think generally it's easier to stop nowadays (I stopped 22 years ago) because you can no longer smoke in the office, in pubs, on public transport, in restaurants etc., plus you will probably have far fewer friends and relatives who smoke - when I started in the 1970s 8/10 of my friends also smoked, as did my sister and my Dad.
I work in a few pubs. They all have big extractor fan in the roof etc, before the smoking ban it was a nasty experience cleaning/fixing fans. Sticky & not pleasant. Miles better for everyone now with the ban 🙂
