hi some one on this page must have had this problem, l keep getting a sweet smell in my urine, sorry if your having dinner, been to dr she tested it she said sugar level was high, so been for a blood test 2 day at hospitol,😱 any help

The smell can be caused by very high sugar levels, when your kidneys work very hard to get rid of the excess. What treatment are you on at the moment?

Hi Rosie

Generally speaking if you have sugar in your urine it means that your BGs have been over the renal threshold which is normally about 11mmol/l for some time. That's rather high and long term can cause you problems with your kidneys. Do you have your own BG meter to test with? Curbing carbohydrates is a good way to lower your BGs. What's your typical daily diet like? Perhaps we could make suggestions to tweak it a bit.

hi leelee & pattie, lm on metroforem think that how u spell it ,but lm nauety cos l dont take it:( as it has made me sick in the past, lve given up all sweet stuff but l do like the glass or 2 maybe 3 wine in the evening my eating a bit hit & miss as l live on my own & some times op for ready meals anyway thanks for your replys rosie😱

Rosie, you really need to go back to your doctor as soon as possible. Tell him/her about the problems that you've had with metformin. They can try you on something else. It's really important to reduce your blood sugar to stop it causing damage.

I use the slow release metformin and have found them to be much better on the stomach than the regular variety.

Hope you get this sorted out soon.

The other thing with metformin is it can help to start with a low dose and then when you get used to that build up. I know that is what I was told by the medic.

If you do get the slow release though make sure that you swallow it hole, as otherwise you don't get the slow release.

You really need to go back and see your GP and explain that you are not taking the metformin and why! The Dr should not judge you but be supportive and look for an alternative for you.

Hope you get things sorted out.

Dear Rosie

Please go and ask for the slow release metformin, it makes a difference. Someone I know on another forum finds that taking Fybogel with metformin stops the problems. Also it's not just sweet things that raise BGs - potatoes, rice, pasta, and bread are all culprits too. Check the labels of your ready meals and try to find the ones with the smallest amount of carbohydrates in them.
