I was put on slow release Metformin last October, but I was already struggling with a very persistent infection, and could not tell the difference between the illness and side effects. Twice I was taken off Metformin, but once the infection finally cleared by early February I tried slow release Metformin again. Everything I read said side effects would clear up in a couple of weeks. They were indeed very bad for the first month, but I have persevered. (Constant nausea, retching, foul taste, cramps, constipation, diarrhoea). Once I had changed my Diverticulitis medication things settled down, and now almost 7 weeks later I have hardly any side effects. I am still queasy some mornings, and do have occasional stomach cramps, but I actually feel better than I have done in 6 months. I hope my HbA1C in late May shows an improvement. So it was well worth persevering, and checking against my other medications.
