A very good morning to everyone. I would value an opinion on the following. I need to lose some weight and it seems everyone I know is doing slimming world, I even heard that gp’s are prescribing slimming world. Is it a good plan for those with Diabetes? It seems to me there is a huge reliance on eating lots of carbs to keep you full.

Hi get a book called carb and cals and follow how many carbs are in a meal, I lost 6 stone in less than a year with no help apart from this book and of course my wife who does the cooking.

As with other things diet wise it varies from person to person. Some Diabetics seem to well on it.

Hello Mark and welcome to the forum, and it is good that you have the motivation to loose some weight.
I am sorry, but I don't know enough about the Slimming World program to answer your question.
There are many Type 1's on the forum that may be able to help with what may work for you.
Have you looked at the main Diabetes UK website advise on what to eat as a Type 1? https://www.diabetes.org.uk/Diabetes-the-basics/Food-and-diabetes/I-have-Type-1-diabetes
My only comment is that whatever eating plan you choose, try to make sure that is something sustainable where you learn what is a good eating plan for you, and it isn't just a quick fix, and the weight goes back on again afterwards.

Its really not a high carb diet...........yes there are a few pasta dishes but the main theme is speed foods [foods that aid/speed up weight loss according to SW], which are fruit and vegetables......getting as much of that in to each meal as you can......

the pasta dishes are for obvious reasons, very appealing to people wanting to diet and cut out the fattier items, but the plan doesn't encourage eating lots of it.....I maybe have it once or twice a week, the rest of the time its protein, rice, lots of veg and eggs......and thats all free on the plan, so you can have as much as possible....

you can have 200ml of semi skimmed milk a day [healthy extra A-1], 40g of light cheese [healthy extra A-2], some wholemeal cereals, cereal bars and bread [healthy extra B] and then your syns, which is all the treats like crisps and chocolate etc......

A man above 15 stone can have 30 syns a day, and for woman you're looking at 15..........

I think its a great diet plan and great for type ones, blood sugars have been great....

Fruit and vegetables are also carbs. Rice is high carb. You can have as much as you like of certain carb foods but they are still carbs. It is up to the person whether they have as much pasta or potatoes as they like. The one thing with type 1 of course is that they have insulin which they can adjust to the carbs they eat so SW is what they make it, but not if they prefer to eat low carb and higher fat of course.

I've used Slimming World recipes as a starting point and adapted them as needed eg less pasta/rice, more veg. Just work out the carbs in each meal

Hope you find a system that works well for you @Mark Jones

Maybe go ‘old skool’ and aim for a fixed carb count and dose for each meal, then make up the total from whatever carbs you fancy?
