How high does your bg levels have to be before sugar is detected in your urine?

Donna

We're all different - I'm sure I've said that before!

However, on a very general basis, if your BG is above 10mmol/l, you'd not be surprised to find some glucose in your urine (around 10mmol/l is the generally accepted renal threshold for glucose).

It's said that glucose is visable in the urine when bg is 10 or above.

When I was diagnosed, urine testing was still the main way of checking BG levels.

I hated it for obvious reasons but also because it so hit or miss. I used to often get a trace or low % of glucose but it was a very vague measure because everyone's renal threshold is different and because it reflected the state of affairs several hours before.

Were you thinking of using urine testing instead of blood testing Donna ?

Same here old-timer, remember the clinitest kit well with the water droplet and tablet that fizzled in the test-tube turning the liquid a certain colour, blue was negative and orange meant your kidneys were gushing glucose, thank heavens for blood glucose meters:D

Until one day you thought you'd be clever and held the test tube in your hand instead of putting it in its natty lttle stand - and nearly dropped it because the tablets literally did boil the contents of the tube!

My stand was wooden, blooming miniature work of art it was. Thought the grey plastic ones that came later were exceptionally naff, as Anne Windsor was wont to say!

I understand that for MODY3 the level at which glucose spills into urine is often much lower, typically around 7 mmol/L.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been suffering from a UTI infection and I got a bit nervous with all the urine tests - 3 in total. I suppose it's a good thing that the doctor smiled and told me there was not a trace of sugar in my urine. He mentioned that I had good control. Obviously my bg levels had been elevated due to the underlying infection. Another scare, but makes you all the more determined to keep these numbers under control.

Donna 🙂
