Just been fr a dentist's appointment. Got there nice and early -a whole day early actually! What a chump! 😱 😱

Fortunately he was able to fit me in and even better just a clean and polish. We were discussing this as I have only had one bit of treatment since diagnosis 4 years ago - and that was to fix a tooth that had broken a week before diagnosis. Prior to diagnosis I was having all sorts of problems over a period of about two years, so ties in with when it is thought my pancreas started misbehaving.
 
wow you were lucky to get an appointment when you turned up a day early :D

good news that you only needed a clean and polish 😉

It's a really excellent dentists - been with them for 12 years. They aren't NHS any more because the new NHS contracts did not allow them the time to do a proper job (everything is laid down and set in stone how long you can spend and what you can offer in terms of treatments). Despite that I'm not paying any more than before because they have a social conscience and are not money-grabbers, and never do any unnecessary work. I used to be terrified of going to the dentists due to horrible childhood experiences, but with this chap it no longer worries me (well, maybe just a bit!). So if anyone in Southampton is looking for a good one let me know! 🙂
 
That was good of them to fit you in and great that you only needed a clean and polish. I have a lovely lady dentist who is private but doesn't charge the earth too. They are about.:D

had terrible childhood experiences of dentists.... then my Mum took us to a newly qualified dentist and life became less stressful at 'check-up' time. he was excellent. then 30 years later he retired!!! 😱

I spent 10 years looking for someone I could trust ..... even found myself a 'butcher' 😱

then found a great dentist.... only for HIM to retire too..... his son was pretty good.... but now HE has left to work at a practice halfway across the country!!!

I'm seeing another new dentist in 2 weeks time 😱
 
I've had three at this practice, although the current one I've had for about 8 years - his wife is also a dentist there! Prior to that one dentist died and the next one moved away. Had a good private one in Folkestone before but she was extremely expensive 😱
 
Northerner you are closer to me than I thought - much closer ! Sadly though as dentists go not quite close enough :D
 
Forgot to say, I told the dentist that I had stopped taking one of my insulins (lantus) and he stepped back in horror! I had to quickly explain that my consultant knew all about it and was fine with it! 🙂 He explained that he can't treat people if they are not complying with their doctor's wishes and not taking their essential medications.
 
That's great that they could squeeze you in!
I've just had a dentist checkup too. She said they were so well looked after that they didn't even need a clean :D
But then she said, "But cleaning your teeth isn't really what keeps them healthy, it's your diet. You need to make sure you don't eat too many sugary things or drink a lot of sugary drinks." To which I reminded her I'm type 1 and I can't really have sugary drinks anyway. To which she replied, "Oh yes, so you need to make sure your levels don't go out of control as that will affect the health of your teeth and gums." So I pointed out my control is quite good, so I'm not worried 😛

My old Dentist was so busy, they could only get you an appointment with about 3 months notice, so I ended up travelling to my GF's parents house 70 miles away and use their dentist as they were so much better and could fit you in with hardly any notice.

I had a horrible experience as a child when I needed a tooth pulling out, but it was in the holidays and the only dentist I could go to was an emergency one. He asked my parents to leave the room, which they now wish they hadn't done, and he proceeded to apply a numbing spray (only numbs about 1mm down) then yanked out my tooth and the root, filling my mouth with blood. I was in agony and as I walked out the door I spat out all the blood on his driveway. I was in tears with pain for the rest of the day :( Luckily that didn't scar me for life and I'm not too bad with going to the dentist. HATE the big anesthetic needle they use though!

My horrible experiences were: once having 6 teeth removed because 'the others were ready to come through' - sick as a pig after having the gas and the new teeth took two years to come through! The other one was when I had a female dentist and nurse and they were giving me fillings. They were chatting the whole time about Keith Michelle in 'The Six Wives of Henry Eighth' (that ages me!) and completely idnored my screams of pain. My Mum could hear me in the waiting room down the corridor and asked them if I'd been OK when they finished - they completely lied and said I'd been fine! 😱 :(

Regarding the needles - one of my big fears was the gum injection because of the needles, and I actually had a filling done without numbing because of my fear. I explained this to my dentist and when he came to inject me on another (necessary!) occasion I felt nothing! I asked how he did it and he said he used child-sized needles - none of the previous dentists had even considered doing that, so I was well impressed.
 
Your story reminded me that William and I turned up a whole ** week ** early for an event in Birmingham, so I thought we'd do something fun instead and I took him to Cadbury World. The following saturday he couldn't attend the event after all because he was in hospital ... and that was the start of all the T1 fun (maybe Cadbury World wasn't the best idea in the circs) 🙄

Oh dear! At least he got to go before he knew that he'd really have to think about it if he went later! 😱 Did his symptoms come on quickly? I felt more or less OK 5 days before I was diagnosed.
 
Yes, he had other stuff going on with his lyphoedema that was probably related, but the typical diabetes things were not that noticeable until four or five days before diagnosis ... Thinking about it though, he was thirstier for weeks before and constipated 😱 which I'm sure was to do with dehydration
