Well, I saw the consultant on Friday but had to wait over two hours as her car had broken down and she had to wait for the AA. I read almost all the copies of Balance they had there while I was waiting. This is in between having more blood taken and being weighed, finding a vein was fun and they had to take it from my foot again (OUCH!). I have an enormous bruise there now as the nurse was a complete clutz.

Consultant says it's your funny pancreas and these things are going to keep happening till it finally gives up the ghost. Like that's news! It seems the blasted thing isn't quiter as decrepit as it seemed at first, my good behaviour, with the diet and exercise has let it recover a bit (I just knew it was all my fault!). She has given me a script for a 5mcg pen and upped the number of strips I can have. She wants me to test at least every two hours unless hypo and either use the 5mcg or the 10mcg depending on the readings.

We discussed the possibility of going on insulin but she says it wouldn't help at this stage, I'd have all the same issues if they put me on a fixed dose, and maybe even worse if I was on dialup as it would be virtually impossible to calculate the correct dose at any given time. According to her there are too many variables, what my BGs are, what the carb ratio is and what my pancreas' reaction would be. She reckons it wil be much easier to work such things out once my pancreas is finished playing games. I asked why she couldn't just wheech it out of there and have done? She thought I was joking.

So I'm stuck on the rollercoaster for the foreseeable. As I said, SIGH!

You must feel so frustrated and it must be quite stressful never knowing what you need to plan for or how much to take with you in the way of snacks in case your pancreas is having a productive day.

I guess the consultant was unable to understand how draining it all is.

Hope that you have a more stable week this week. {{{HUGS}}}

Sorry to hear this Alison, though great that you are being given what sounds like good care and advice.

Good luck with testing every 2 hours 😱 your poor fingers!

Oh, yeah, I forgot, I'm to go back in a month with the results in my hot sticky little hand, Though what good it will do I can't imagine. It won't change anything. As you say, my poor fingers. Can I use my toes too?

Sorry to hear that there is no way to overcome the problem Ally :( I guess it's like a honeymoon period, but more inconsistent and dragging on forever. Although I may have some residual beta cell function it is at least fairly steady and low level. In hindsight though, I do wonder if a couple of severe hypos I have had since diagnosis were a rare 'surge' in homegrown insulin since on those occasions there was no fast-acting in my system. Again, with hindsight, it's more than likely the numerous occasions I woke up soaked in sweat pre-diagnosis were bad night hypos caused by a combination of heavy drinking and erratic insulin production. It sounds ungrateful doesn't it, to hope that your pancreas just stops producing insulin altogether so you can get some control over things? Hopefully, you will end up in the same (happy?) position as me, with a little low-level help from your organ and decent in-range numbers 🙂

Aaaawwww I'm not surprised you are having big sighs. It's a waiting game for you and it must be so frustrating. When tha poor old Pancreas finally gives up, then I suppose it's all systems go for you. Good luck and I hope in time, things will get a bit easier for you. Take care Sheena x

Corr, what a flaming PITA. At least mine was good enough to pop it's clogs completely fairly quickly.

What your consultant probably was thinking was - this woman doesn't understand that insulin ain't the only thing her pancreas produces. There are other digestive ?hormones or ?enzymes that Mr P kindly adds and it's more than a double whammy losing the whole thing, cos them ones have to be replaced as well as just the insulin.

BTW I only know this cos over where I come from, we have a recent member who has had the whole caboodle whipped out.

Haven't learned my 'new thing about diabetes for today' yet, either. Who knows what that will be!

Oh phooey Trophy, I hadn't thought of that!
