to be honest I'm thinking bed. Maybe its the stress of having to go to work tomorrow and deal with the dragon? LOL! I might keep some munch by the bed just incase. Seriously, wierd crazy diabetes stuff

Ok Sam , Goodnight and take care . 🙂 Grrr I hate your boss 😡 I hope you feel better soon . xx

I think insulinaddict is probably right. It'll probably a combination of small things. But what do I know? 🙄

silly 🙄 i do think you two are right, small things rather than dinner issues. Stress, work, being run down and just wanting to sleep instead of having to get up and do stuff! Oh real life, go away now.

:(

I'm going to check before bed and if its dropping like a stone then munch on something. I don't want to wake up at a silly level again, cuz that really does suck!

Thanks everyone! At least I know when to use ketostix now! Is it sad that I'm looking forward to it in some wierd way?! I cant ever remember using one!!!!

Thanks lovey! I hate him too, but hopefully not much longer there, just waiting for a phone call over the next few days and boom, bye bye nasty dragon man.

Night night all! x

Hi All....

I was told to check Nathan for ketones when his BG was 15...or after 3 consecutive readings of 13....

Heidi
xx🙂

I would personally check if I was above 15- but for me that isn't very often. If you are high but have active insulin then you probably won't have ketones unless you are also sick.

I used to check for ketones if I was in the mid teens plus &/or felt really ill (sicky etc)...but since finding out I'm prg, I've had ketones at even as low as 9mmol!! 😱 Very scary, especially as they told me not to correct under 2 hrs... ?!! All I was told was the ketones were down to the serious phsiological (hope that's the right word lol!) stress of the pregnancy, but my consultant mentioned that it's unusual to have problems with ketones like I have this early... darn that diabetes gremlin...!

Anyway, hope you're feeling better now Salmonpuff.

Maybe a silly question but what would you do if you tested for ketones and it was positive?

If the test result shows a trace of ketones or small amount of ketones
- Drink plenty of water
- Avoid exercise
- Test your blood glucose and urine for ketones every 4 hours, particularly if blood sugars higher than 15 mmol/l
- If no improvement, discuss with your nurse or on-call doctor
- If the result shows a large amount of ketones inform your doctor
- Drink a glass of water every 30-60 minutes
- If your blood sugars are high and you have short-acting insulin, consider taking an additional dose of insulin
- If you continue to vomit and your urinary ketones are strongly positive contact your doctor or seek hospital admission as a matter of urgency.

When I was diagnosed my ketones were at max, and she said if they don't disappear go to the hospital? I was very confused, would I have felt ill?? Anyway they reduced by the next morning and were gone the day after. But although I accept they're not good, are there any symptons to know they are high? or is it just one of the factors in dka?

Ketones have never been expalined to me, but it now gives me some answers to problems I have had in the past.

Do very high blood sugars/ketones make you vomit?

Thanks

Yes they can do but it does vary from person to person , I've had sugars of 30+ with ketones and not vomited but on other occasions been in the 18's with ketones and couldnt stop vomiting . I would say as a warning though , if you ever have ketones and are vomiting you do need some medical advice as it could be the start of DKA which as a type 1 is not good news , if in doubt always phone the doctor or DSN . Never take unnecessary risks with your health.

Thanks for the info.

Will look into ketones and DKA.

You should have been told about Ketones by your DSN or Doctor , as a type 1 you need to know about them incase you get a bug or are ill in anyway which can push glucose levels up, which in turn can produce Ketones . :( I have an Optium Xceed glucose monitor which tests for blood Ketones as well as blood sugars, Ketones show up in blood several hours before they do in urine so I favour blood testing.

Hmmm this optimum exceed monitor sounds pretty awesome. Soon as I'm all transferred over to Southampton I might have a word and see if I can get one

I got mine free from a DSN at the hospital when I went in with DKA , I have a few meters but always go back to my trusty Optium 😉😉

Thanks Insulinaddict, it seems my diabetes care isn't up to much in this area. And because I am not newly diagnosed I seem to be forgotton about.

Saying that when I was diagnosed, my care wasn;t much better.

:(

I am learning a lot from reading this forum though. It's a slow process of re-educating myself but I'm getting there.

Hi Urban I know what you mean , I dont have a DSN or specialist and havent seen one since I was discharged from Hospital 😱 I also see you are in North west , same area as me , its a postcode lottery I think 🙄 If you need any help or advice or just a moan we are all here and know what its like first hand . dont hesitate to ask , and if I can help in anyway i will :D

Same here I have tried other meters but always go back to the optimum, I don't even test ketones that often, probably once every 6 months
