My daughter (type 1 diabetic since age 3) has applied for a provisional driving licence. She is sixteen and will be seventeen in a few days. We filled in the forms. The DVLA have written back offering a three year licence with a letter asking for the old licence to be sent back to them (which of course we do not have as this is a first licence).

Is it normal for the first provisional licence to be a three year medical one? Or have they made a mistake thinking she is older and already has a full licence which they want returned as the letter says?

Has anyone any relevant experience with provisional licences?

Thanks in advance.

As your daughter has T1 diabetes presumably being treated with insulin therapy, a three year medical licence is standard issue unless under certain circumstances it can be reduced or even revoked/refused. The DVLA would have contacted your daughter's medical team to help assess her condition. As long as she follows the testing protocol whilst driving she should continue to receive three yearly renewals. The letter she received is more likely to be the standard letter DVLA send out. Just notify them if you are required to do so that there is no previous provisional licence to return. I assume you have already sent back the form which includes her signing to agree to test at the appropriate times if driving.

You can ring the DVLA Medical Branch to check what's what officially.

All T1 diabetic folk get a three year licence, provisional or full. Though if she passes first time, the full licence she gets is likely to be another three years. It’s a bit of a pest, but it’s not such a big deal filling in a form every three years. Perfectly reasonable from a medical point of view.

Its a long time since mine was issued, it was 2 years then. I need to re-apply. From what i have read 3 seems to be the standard.
