Shocking cost of electric car insurance

Perhaps the unintended consequence of having an electric car might have some benefit (extra wide spaces) in the future as they try to prevent a domino effect from ev vehicle fires. With the disabled parking bays, if you qualify for one, which as you say isn't always easy to get, we get an extra three foot (1200mm width). This will likely be the size of the proposed electric vehicle bays. However, it would be an expensive way to get some room to open your door at around £40K plus.
oh my thats very unlikely . I’m unlikely to apply unless absolutely necessary. I would just like a few more places to not have double yellow but a lot now near towns are resident parking permits only

Yup! There was a vintage Austin Metro on a nearby street a few years back that looked miniscule compared to modern hatchbacks.
I had the MG version back in the day. Just no room for anything, had to mount the speakers in the rear parcel shelf? Just one stock mono speaker in the dash.
Back in the 80s I thought the Audi Quattro was a big car? I saw a C reg in a car park. It had tonnes of room between the lines.

my seat ibiza can hardly be much bigger so it must be me . Next time i go ill show you the spaces. However at the moment it is unlikely we will afford an electric car or the insurance. and you cant have one without the other.

Electric cars can be particularly expensive to repair, costing around a quarter more to fix on average than a petrol or diesel vehicle. Experts have previously warned electric vehicles are being written off after minor bumps because of the cost and complexity of fixing their batteries.

Mr. Hewett said: “The challenge is that we have no way of understanding whether the battery has been compromised or damaged in any way.

“The threat of thermal runaway means that a catastrophic fire can take place if the cells of the battery have been damaged in a collision.

I’m not a big fan of any vehicle I can’t crack open easily & fix myself, should it go wrong.
I have breakdown cover, but only used it once to “flat bed” home so I could set to work on it.
I’m not against EVs. Just out of my price range. Like all newer vehicles.
I prefer to “recycle” by reconditioned spare parts and repair. Sometimes a new part is needed like a thermostat for the gauge or a coolant hose.
I’d only pay a technician for the time if equipment was required that would cost extra for the job completion & not be used again?

How, when and where are these batteries made ? Surely all that adds to the cost plus is it any greener. Electricity is not made from 100% green energy. Surely it would be better to use the cars less ? i do not know but with electric bikes setting houses on fire killing people in them. I donr warm to them.

Many years ago the manager of my local shop (who was a friend.) mentioned a weird smell out the back in the stores whilst I happened to be picking up supplies? To him it smelt like a dead rat, but couldn’t find the source apart from it was stronger in a cleaning cupboard. I went out back with him & lent a nose. It didn’t smell like a “corpse” to me.
But I did recognise an electrical burning smell from a vehicle I once owned. (Hadn’t owned it for long.) and honed in on a device left on charge in the corner.

“Mate, unplug that battery powered floor scrubber & put it outside in the back. Then contact your contract cleaning company.” It seemed to smell like a poorly maintained battery about to burst into flames.

This could also be a sign of things to come :-

A 50-year-old car park has been shut down after experts found its concrete structure was crumbling.
Surveyors had warned that the concrete was corroding because it was not built for modern, heavy cars.

My EV is a class 3 mobility scooter these days.
Pennies to charge up, range of tens of miles and can carry double my weight so I can shop all I need.
It has a big comfortable seat from which I could captain a star ship or tootle off down to the beach and along the promenade.
EVs to potter around town and liquid fuel for longer trips is surely far more sensible than the present option being pushed on us.
