Hi, my dad had a pancreatectomy a few years ago. Sometime he gets hit by a period of illness where he stays in bed for 24-48 hours. He spends a lot of time shivering, and complains about being cold. He also loses his apetite. Does anyone know why this might happen and how to avoid/remedy it?

I've a suspicion it has something to do with his fat/oils intake and possibly him not taking his creon.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
It sounds as if you need to put in a call to your dad's GP as we can not offer solutions on this forum. I hope you get some answers soon.

OK thanks. Any replies from people with shared experiences would be appreciated!

Hi @jrd656 and welcome to the forum. There are a few members who have had part if not all their pancreas removed but as far as I (a humble T2) can make out the resulting effects are very individual and so as Pumper_Sue says only somebody familiar with all the details of your Dad's situation can make any sensible judgements. This would be either his GP or the team who did the surgery.

You have put Type 1 in your profile. Is that because of your dad or are you Type 1?

Hi @jrd656 I had a partial pancreatectomy 13 years ago and am generally in rude health. If your dad isn’t taking his Creon and partaking of fatty food he will feel ill, not only will he probably have stomach pains and the accompanying dash to the loo, he won’t be taking in any nutrients which may explain him taking to his bed. (If I over indulge in fatty food, even with Creon, I have been known to have to have a lie down for an hour as I feel sick and I vow never to eat ever again, but I’m usually fine the next day.) He may be malnourished if he’s not taking the correct amount of Creon and that would make him feel pretty ropey. I am only guessing as I’ve never not taken my Creon, too much of a risk. I think as @Pumper_Sue suggested I would make him an appointment to see his GP just to rule out anything else. One thing though, does he make a habit of not taking his Creon and has he given you a reason for this? You must make him understand that it isn’t a drug, it’s a supplement and you need what you need. Elaine.

pretty much what I ate before the op just cut out cakes and chocolate and white bread.Bloods are always in range songs don’t feel the need to alter this.

I suppose we’re all different, I was started on Creon before my op. You must still be producing enzymes, I still produced insulin for three years. Aren’t our bodies wonderful things.

Hope you Dad gets some answers from his GP/nurse - is there any reason why he is resistant to taking his Creon?

His symptoms sound very draining and unpleasant for him :(
