Could anyone help me, the problem is my right shin is always red and dry and every time I knock it even lightly, it blisters and scabs over the last time took about 8 weeks to start healing properly. And it gets like tiny blisters on it, my nurse as just told me to keep moisturising it. But can't stop catching it at work and on the pedals of my cycle. Is there something like shin pads but softer thank you

You need something like diprobase but I think that you'll need to get this on prescription..

Another one that is over the counter is Aqueous cream you can also get it on prescription..

But do pop in and see either your diabetic nurse/GP who can prescribe it for you, and double check that there's not another underlying issues with your skin condition that might need a different treatment..

But the above 2 are often prescribed for older people who skins are dehydrated or very thin due to age... It rehydrates it half makes a difference...

I have had exactly the same for 7 years or so.

I've seen all sorts of people, diabetic consultant, DSNs, skin specialists, people who deal with circulation, they have been biopsied twice - NOTHING.

No-one has come up with a definitive diagnosis or answer.

It is something I have had to live with.

Yes, do keep the skin well moisturised.

Good luck

I found, when my eczema was at it's worst, the best way to keep it from drying out was to put the cream on a dressing and hold it in place with a stocking bandage. This also gave a little extra protection against knocks. Perhaps it would work for you too.

It sounds similar to celulitis, which is sorted out with antibitoics and the last episode I had, the doctor gave me some dermol cream too. I'd suggest seeing the docotor, just in case.

Welcome FencycList.

Shin pads souns like a good idea - I've caught my shins on my bike pedals several times, although don't have the skin problems you have, so the wounds heal fairly quickly. Many shin pads these days have soft foam lining, so you should be able to find something suitable - definitely a time to visit a sports shop to examine items and try on. Moisturising cream will probably help a bit, too. Also, for graze type wounds, I find film dressing such as Tegaderm good - you leave the dressing in place for days, can see skin underneath and can wash it as normal.

Hi

My shins have started getting really dry & I use what I have left of the diprobase cream prescribed to me last year to help with soreness after 3 weeks radiotherpay.

I did at that time pop into Boots & you could buy it. I wanted a small tube to carry around rather than lug the large pot I had on prescription. It is quite expensive in March 2010 the large pot I had would of cost me about ?14.00 if I remember rightly. They sold me a plastic travel tube & I decanted some from my large pot to carry around for use during the day.

I did use aqueous cream as well but the nurse I saw at the practise said they prefer you to use diprobase as aqueous over the long-term can thin the skin. She did say it is quite effective if you use aqueous as a shower-creme. It costs very little as a tub in a supermarket is only about ?3.00 more expensive in a chemist like Boots.

Have you tried aqueous as a shower-creme first then your normal moisturiser on top after may give your poorly shins a double dose. Hope they start to improve shortly.

Take care
Lynne
