Shift Work

Hi folks,

I work as a railway signalman at Network Rail, a job which involves shift work (Standard hours are 06:00 - 14:00, 14:00 - 22:00 and 22:00 - 06:00) I have been doing the job for a few years, but I still find that night shifts require extra glucose monitoring.

I often find myself ravenously hungry on nights, with the expected consequences for my readings. I have found that the only way around this is to test once an hour and act accordingly; luckily I am on FreeStyle Libre 2 so this isn't much of an issue.

Does anybody else work shifts and notice any issues as a result?

I think adjusting to shift work can be a real challenge, but doubly so when attempting to manage diabetes into the bargain.

Are your shifts on a regular rotating pattern? How often are you working nights?

Extra monitoring and reacting to changes sounds like a good strategy.
