Several of my friends on Friday have got letters saying they must shield I was rather shocked as at the start of the lockdown BJ said they would not be telling people to shield also this will be for several weeks these letters have come from the GP ( I think ) these friends are over 70 like me

We have each had two since the start of November - one from the DHS and one from the County Council, as we're both considered clinically about to disintegrate.

I hope they haven't wasted time and paper sending me another one!... If I could be bothered to empty my letter box, it may well be sitting there waiting for me to find it.

No-one is saying you "must" shield. It is advice, as it was during the last lockdown.

Have they got other illness as I understood it very few would be advised to shield , the advice was more to limit contacts.

I am rather surprised to hear this too @grovesy.

I was under the impression that shielding wasn’t happening in the same way this time round.

This seems to be the latest guidance
https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...ng-extremely-vulnerable-persons-from-covid-19

What has changed

COVID-19 case numbers are rising rapidly across the whole of the UK.
Everyone in England, including those who are clinically extremely vulnerable, is required to follow the new national restrictions from 5 November, which have been set out by the government and apply to the whole population. These restrictions:
  • require people to stay at home, except for specific purposes
  • prevent people gathering with those they do not live with, except for specific purposes
  • close certain businesses and venues
The new information below includes additional guidance for clinically extremely vulnerable people, to help protect you from coronavirus (COVID-19). We will also write to you with a version of this guidance.
These new shielding measures will apply nationally for 4 weeks up to 2 December. At the end of the period, we will look to return to a regional approach and will issue further guidance at the time.
—————————
The additions to the general national guidance seem to be ‘really honestly don’t go out’ (even to the shops or pharmacy) and that you must work from home, and should not work if you can’t.

My dad had an email from the DHSC earlier this month to say he was clinically vulnerable and should follow the current shielding advise.

I had a letter on Friday as well which was about 8 days after lockdown 🙄 basically saying no picking up meds or going shopping.

It's gone in the shredder as did the other ones I received last time around. Waste of paper and trees as far as I can see.
I shop for about 4 elderly people and pick up their meds for them. There's no online slots even for the vulnerable. Suspect it has a lot to do with certain people who manage to get 3 different supermarkets to deliver to them in one day.
No idea what they do with the food they order as it's a family of two.
