This is a really stupid question I know.... but my first sharps bin is getting full. What on earth do I do with it and where do I get another.

I think its normally down to your local council through the gov.uk, i have a nightmare with mine i just cant get them collected so i wont say what i do with mine 😳. Did you not get any info with your current sharps bin?

I think its down to your local authority, give them a call or im sure a local pharmacist will know how they get collected and exchanged. When i was first diagnosed i lived on a main road with my front door straight onto the pavement on a major school route and they wanted me to leave it outside the door from 7am til midday to be collected. There was no way i was doing that so i buy my bins off ebay now and when full they live in my attic for a minute, not ideal and really must get that sorted now.

I was told by the DN to contact the council, but I noticed there is a yellow dumpster at the GPs surgery so I’m going to ask them next time I’m in.

Arrangements for disposing of full sharps bins vary depending on where you live. Usually, people with diabetes have to ring their local councils. Some councils charge you for this service but most don't.

It is another one of the variables, depends on where you live.

Up here where I am in Scotland I take my full one to the chemist where I then get it exchanged for an empty one which shows how much things vary depending where you live xx

Where I am, I take the full one to my GP surgery and they swap it for an empty one, then they get collected from the surgery in bulk.
It is ultimately the Council's responsibility, so presume they’ve got an arrangement with them.

Our council have a sharps collection service. As others have said it depends on where you live.
I would phone your council or GP Practice and ask them what you should do.

Same here.

I have to take mine to the local health clinic and they swap it over for a new one.

I get my new boxes on my repeat prescription, and return full ones to the surgery. Pharmacy will not accept them.
Council will collect, but I am very reluctant to leave them out for collection for hours, visible from pavement used by hordes of FE students from the college at the end of the road. Until recently, a house almost opposite was involved in drug dealing. Thankfully the last county lines crackdown resulted in arrests, and the house has been sold.

Hi. I also have mine on repeat prescription and take my full one to the surgery.

I need to re order sharps boxes on prescription from my health centre & my local chemist takes my full boxes of sharps back from me. They have an arrangement with the council to get all the used sharps boxes collected & destroyed. So, I just automatically order a sharps box with insulin & needles & hand back the full sharps boxes when I get a new prescription at the chemist.

Ask your GP for advice about how it’s done in your area? Or your diabetic nurse as it’s bound to be something that’s come up before!

My council collects mine when full, just a phone call and they come and collect it and leave a another one, (empty of course).

Here it is the council but as it is tricky to arrange I wait till I have two or three. Currently the service is suspended for sharps, etc. although they still collected souled dressings, etc. as a priority!
