My GP surgery takes my full bin and I get a new one on prescription.

Please guys vote! There are many more replies than votes. Everyday shouldn't need to analyse posts!
I couldn’t vote as my experience is a mix of GP and local authority and I wouldn’t call the system either easy or a nightmare!

I get my sharps bin on prescription and take it to the dispensary at my Surgery when it's full.

For the last 2-3 months or so I have been trying to get rid of my sharp bins, but no one seems to be accepting them, last weekend I gave up and put them in my bin...

Easy apart from one time. On prescription and was told return to surgery, did this for years then went in one day to be told by receptionist can't leave it here, told them do what you want with it but not taking it back, left it there not had issues since.

They insist on signature on prescription label on return, no idea why so don't mind.

Thats terrible. :(

Is there nothing mentioned on your council website?

Fascinating to see the differences to the poll I did on Twitter.

And intriguing that in both places many get sharps boxes on prescription, even though it’s the LA that should be dealing with them. No wonder folks get confused!

Great that so few people here seem to have ’no system’ though.

Last year when I got the letter from my surgery saying the system had changed. I was not suprised it had changed but was that they wrote and informed me.
I was surprised 3 years ago when I had my knee replacement, in the local Private Hospital, and I was on Clexane for a weeks and they gave me a sharps bin to take home. I was told to return the full bin back to ward, was suprised when I returned it was no problem.

I get mine on prescription, always have.

I have 3 7 litre sharps boxes. No idea why they left 3 last time, but I’ve nearly filled the 3rd....it’s taken a while. I’ll ring the local council, leave them on the step late at night on the relevant day and then they get picked up and replaced usually about 7am. Very straightforward.

That‘s the same system where I live (though I only get one box at a time not three 😱)

Well first I actually have to get hold of a sharps bin, usually requires at least 3 attempts because they “can’t” put it on repeat. Disposal used to be fairly straightforward at the diabetes clinic, now they won’t take them, it has to be GP surgery but they will only take 1 at a time. Problem is I don’t drive and no buses go near my surgery so it’s a 40 minute walk for one sharps bin. Life is too short for that, plus it’s only open during office hours so it’s a nonsense. I’ve invested in a needle clipper because I’m sick of messing around with it all. The stupid thing is, I live 10 minutes walk away from the hospital that the sharps bins are delivered to, but they refuse to take them unless the hospital prescribed them. Bobbins. Then the local rag ran a story about abandoned medical waste, not surprising really when they make it so hard to do the right thing. I currently have 10 full sharps bins, but I’ll be jiggered if I’m making 10 individual trips to the GP.

I don’t put the Libre applicator in it anyway, the needle is tucked up inside and unlikely to hurt anyone. Same reason that I don't put the Multiclix lancet drums in.

My clinic told me to put the needles in a milk/drinks bottle and put it in the general waste until i get a sharps bin as the pharmacy is out of them

No, i checked on the website this week again before I went to my local pharmacy yesterday and they said all the pharmacy in the area arent accepting them as the council isnt coming to collect it from them. The pharmasist said he was chasing it as he had all these sharp bins to get rid off (hence he couldnt accept any more). I guess it is some sort of cost saving

Easy
1 simple phone call to my local authority & then leave the bin out for the morning requested.
not had a problem yet - I was even able to request a small bin for travel without a fuss

It's local authority for me and should be really easy. It has to be arranged on a 'simple to use' computer system, but the system is sometimes down. We have had instances of notifying them of collection several days in advance and then nothing actually happening on the day, which results in another wait until the same day the following week.

Pick up a small one at chemist and take it back. No fuss, no ordering.
