I know this is a silly question but with everything i needed to know forgot to ask what do you do with my sharps bin when i seal it?

My local pharmacy takes them, but not all do. Worth checking with them.

My go surgery takes mine. Give them a ring and ask - it seems to vary a lot!

Unfortunately like everything else Diabetes related it varies around the country. This topic crops up regularly. I get mine on prescription and return to GP practice.
I have read where some have great difficult to get rid of.

I just have to go to the chemist to swap mines x

My local council takes them as clinical waste. I had to get a referral from my GP to the service, so I'd start with asking at your surgery. As mentioned though, it varies enormously around the country, so you need to find out what happens locally. 🙂

Time to resurrect my 'Sharps Bin' poem - hope you don't encounter problems like this! :D

The Rude Receptionists

‘I’ve filled up my sharps bin, can I give it to you?’
‘I’m not sure if we take them, I don’t think that we do!
I’ll just wait for Elsie, till she’s done on the phone,
I don’t want to make the decision alone.’

‘Ah look! See, she’s finished – Elsie, what do you think?
If we took in this sharps bin, would they kick up a stink?’
‘No, I don’t think we take them, we ought to ask Kate…
I don’t think she’s here yet, she’s coming in late.’

‘Do you think you could come back when there’s more of us here?
We can’t make the decision, I know it sounds queer.
It’s more than our job’s worth! When we got employed
We were told all the things we’re supposed to avoid.’

‘Like being efficient, polite and at ease,
We’re supposed to ignore you and do as we please.
And if you get angry and kick up a fuss,
We’ll tell all and sundry that you wear a truss!’

‘And if you should happen to come in here ill
We’ll make you stand waiting – it gives us a thrill!
There’ll be no appointments if you need to be seen –
We’re supposed to be grumpy, obstructive and mean.’

‘Could you move to the side please? I think I saw Kate!
Perhaps you’d move quicker if you lost some of that weight!
Ah Kate! Can you tell me before you go in,
Do you ever remember us taking a bin?’

‘I don’t think we take them.’ ‘No, that’s what I thought.’
‘Be patient now, madam, please don’t get distraught!’
‘Perhaps if we rang up Elaine in supplies?’
‘She might not have time – she’s up to her eyes!’

‘Oh please will you take it? I’ve been here an hour!
Perhaps I could talk to someone with more power?’
‘There’s Dr. Fitzmichael, I think he will know…
Too late – that’s his Volvo! I just saw it go!’

‘Well…perhaps we could take it, and when he gets back
We’ll find out if that’s why Janine got the sack…
No! Don’t pass it over! I might get infections!
We have to take care with all our collections!’

‘Elsie, pass me those gloves, and Kate - you watch out!
You have to be careful with addicts about!
That is why you’ve got this? Because you take drugs?
I wouldn’t let your type drink out of our mugs!’

‘Now, pass it me slowly, are you sure it’s tight shut?
Imagine of one of those stuck in my foot!
Goodbye! No, you’re welcome – I hope that you’ve learned
We’d rather this wasn’t where your bins are returned…!’

😱 :D

Hi. If it's the councils clinical waste collection that deals with sharps bins in your area, allow about a months worth of space in the bin for your first collection and delivery. As they need to contact gp practice and it takes time to sort out well mine did , after that your next collection and delivery will be much swifter.

My council issues 5L bins - I'm only on my third in 9 years! 😱 Latest one is about 75% full, but doesn't seem to be getting any fuller! 🙂

I get 5L too, they do last don't they.

I get my sharps bin on prescription, the chemist issues it but they don't accept them back. I have to hand them back in to my GP receptionist. I've currently got two full 2.5L ones that I keep forgetting to take down!

Ooh what a nice handbag :D.

Exactly the same scenario with me

I think I can return my sharps bin to the Pharmacy who dispensed my script but having read the above, I'll give them a call beforehand to ask

Think I must be lucky the 3 GP practices I have been with, they all have issued new bins and taken in the full ones, did have to ask at the new one as they do appear to be slightly different in the ways they do things.

Simple answer is ask whoever gave you the bin what to do when it's full. Different areas, by health / CCG or equivalent and by local council, do things their own way(s).

In Coventry - the pharmacies take them back. Over the border in Nuneaton & Bedworth - the council - however I dunno who issues new ones in N & B. I get 1 litre ones on repeat scrip and they say they are not allowed to issue larger ones, end of story. Last me getting on for 3 months at a time, 6+ months when I was jabbing as I never put any of the plastic and paper in there - just the actual sharps.

That's what I do Jenny only sharps go in mine
Though I'm not sure what to do with my used sensors

I got told the same, only 1 litre ones available. And because I have covered needles I have very big sharps so they take me nearer 3 weeks than 3 months to fill up - so it's ridiculous not to give me the 5 litre ones! I can at least just return them to GP surgery though, no forms required, I just give them a carrier bag full of them whenever I go in ... 🙄

Pharmacist told me, it is impossible to order anything larger from any wholesaler - I wondered whether to make a call the Daniels Healthcare. However if it's the CCG who are tying peopled hands ....

I just wonder if it's to stop unregistered druggies getting hold of them - but personally I'd rather the unregistered ones could, to avoid innocents getting needlestick injuries from who knows what contamination - whereas the ones we and other genuine users have are fairly well guaranteed to be reasonably clean. Of course - any of the genuine users including us could have something terribly catching wrong with us to make them not only sharp but also 'clinical' waste. A puzzle !

Met a bloke on hols last year who was on dialysis and insulin - he had about a 10L at least bin - a small yellow dustbin in size. He had to get that direct from the hospital. I've never seen so much medical equipment in a caravan before - didn't see his portable dialysis machine they had managed to borrow for the holiday as they had an end bedroom and they said it stayed there. They had two EHU connections in use and had had to pre-arrange it all with the site - which is OK where we were (in the Dordogne) as the owners are Dutch and all speak perfect English Dutch French and other languages - always make me feel a bit ashamed I'm not completely and instantly fluent in anything other than English.

If you've been before, they instantly greet you with Christian names and ask how you are etc before they get down to checking you in, probably why they are so successful and the third generation are about to take over very soon - and why people keep going back there!
