Relationship to Diabetes

My son has been working with his diabetic clinic for a year now to gain their approval for him to regain his driving licence (lost due to hypos). We were delighted when his doctor gave approval a few months ago and he has been eagerly awaiting getting his licence from DVLA. They finally communicated yesterday with a refusal because he has been using a Sensor to measure his blood sugar levels - something suggested by his clinic. He is talking to his doctor and clinic to see how we can resolve. Can anyone offer any helpful advice in this regard?

ErM considering that DVLA state on their website that CGM is not acceptable instead of blood glucose reading then I'm not surprised they turned your son down.
Surely though your son calibrated the CGM twice a day and also poked his finger before meals so he could adjust his dosage for carb content? So just send in the blood sugar readings................ Problem solved.

Welcome to the forum, catrogan.
As Pumper_Sue has explained, meter readings of blood glucose levels are required by DVLA, including before driving and every 2 hours on long jounrneys.

From memory I believe that the requirement is to be able to provide if asked for, 3 months worth of finger prick blood test results. Probably his best bet is to record 3 months worth of blood test results with a finger prick meter and then reapply. I would never ever condone falsifying readings but if I were a devious chap I might have a look at the time and date facility on my finger prick meter. It would really pay to ensure that he doesn't accidentally test a lot over a two week period and keep changing the dates and times to make 2 weeks look like 3 months of results. This would after all be completely wrong. It should never ever be tried even if his CGM or sensor is showing a long term trend of results which are above the minimum level of DVLA driving guidelines.

The clinic are only interested in his diabetes control; and if it helps him get his licence back, all very well and good - but that is not their prime concern.

If you wish to hold a licence then you have to be prepared to keep to the rules that DVLA apply - and there's been enough on the forums and Facespace since the Libre was released saying that the readings are not acceptable to DVLA cos they're not blood test results (CGMs all test interstitial fluid, which is about 10 minutes behind BG) - I'm surprised your son didn't know.
