Hi all

Realise I’ve not been around in a while but I have a query

anyone suddenly become really insulin sensitive again? Over the last 4 months I’ve been continuing to reduce my basal. Now on 16units per day (in June I was on 24)... but in the last two weeks I’m regularly battling hypos - tonight for instance I only covered half my carbs and yet I’m now at 4.6 (started at 6 before dinner, I ate at 6pm).

I know I can reduce everything further but do people find this happens for a few weeks then reverts to normal or am I just becoming more sensitive as I always thought I’d get more resistant with time?

Thanks!

Goodness knows grainger - frankly I'd be ringing my DSN on Monday if it happened to me cos the only times it has has been on holiday in Greece where it's been scorchio.

Yes, I can skip around the numbers quite a bit 😱 A year ago I was on nealry 40 units a day, a few weeks ago I went right down to 5 units for an entire day, then went back up to about 20 and now I'm back down to about 12 units 😱 Personally, I think that, however slightly it might change, the length of the day has a significant effect on my requirements - it started declining again after the Winter Solstice! 😱 🙂 I had a meal last night that, three weeks ago would have required 10 units, but only required 3 units now - even then I found my levels dropping a bit low before bed and had to have a couple of custard creams! 😱 🙂

think I’ll email them later. Thanks!

how are you? How are the grandkids?

that’s crazy! How do you manage it all? I feel like I’m just fighting fires at the min and it’s exhausting.... I love the fact I need less insulin but it’s back to constant guess work.

It's much less of a problem for me, I think, because I don't need basal insulin, which I think is at the root of many people's problems when requirements change. I know how fortunate I am in this respect! 😱 🙂 I hope things settle down into a more reasonable pattern for you soon 🙂

I’m very grateful to be on a pump as the temp basal setting is massively helping.

at least it’s keeping me on my toes 🙂

Hi @grainger I have a similar problem and have now reduced my Basal by a third since Christmas. Like @Northerner I was on 54 units in the morning and 22 at night now down to15 a.m. 5 p.m., I am in constant contact with my DSN and see the D Consultant every 3 months. As @trophywench says contact the DSN tomorrow and explain your concerns, good luck.

I've also had this same issue over the last couple of months. I don't know why. Its the D, it just does as it pleases.

Ok I’m glad to know I’m not the only one!

Keep randomly thinking it’s because my body is prepared for seriously cold weather but it hasn’t come so it’s behaving like I’m on holiday 🙄

no hypos today thankfully so far!

I said to the DSN I felt like a fraud as I only need 5 to 6 units of lantus a day , because I am very low carb don’t need much nova either . She just said I was one of the lucky ones !!!

Yup. I’ve had more than a few random fluctuations over the past couple of years. It used to be that my insulin requirements would go ‘up a bit... down a bit’ but generally the shape of my basal profile, and behaviour around different meals was fairly consistent.

these days my basal profile is wont to completely change shape, and my ratios and timings can switch and change at the drop of a hat. Quite annoying actually... but thank goodness for sensors!

Having a hypo as I type, but I've got 2 family members in different hospitals, I think this is playing its part.

Hope you treated before you typed!

sorry to hear about your family being in hospital. Hope you (and they!) recover swiftly.

It happens, things ticking away nicely then few days run of low bg, just one of many frustrations of living with condition.

Not experienced using more insulin over time, 39 years type 1 and use half as much insulin than 30+ years ago, in that time diet not changed much, same with weight & activity.

Someone on DSF has just asked about exactly the same thing - so sounds like it's rife.

Maybe my hypo this morning wasn't a one-off - I'll have to see tomorrow …...

Hope they are soon on the mend. Be kind to yourself! Xx

I'm hoping no more hypos for you!

No - fine today except only 3. something before lunch so I do need to slightly tweak around 10am ish by the looks. Which I'm glad you said that - cos I haven't bolused for my sandwich! LOL 13.5, what a surprise - not. 1.95u bolus safely delivered and basal rates tweaked from 10am to 12.
