Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hello, new to group. im not new to diabetes but iam new to insulin. ive had lixisenitide for 4 years but it stopped working for me,i take invokana 300mg a day too. taking semglee, 10 at min one shot a day. had it 3 weeks.feel like ive put a dress size on.its not lowering the sugar so dont see point.i want to end taking insulin,i dont feel happy with it at all i feel swollen.i had hardly anything to eat other day and my sugars were in 20 s.whats point.sincebeing on semglee i want to eat more and i want sweet things.pointless.

You need to go back to your GP and tell them what is going on we can not help you with your medication. Insulin does not make you gain weight though. If you are swollen from taking the insulin then perhaps an allergy problem but then why haven't you phoned the GP or out of hours for a change of medication?

im new to it i dont know what to expect.alot say insulin does make you gain weight. im thinking if after 3 weeks im from size 12 jeans to 14 ,its alot. if i stay as iam now im fine with it but if i go bigger then my joints will be bad again n worse i have r/a also fibro,m/e. i was size 20 , 4 yrs ago.then with lixisenitide i then dropped to a 12 .as advised. its best not to have weight on they said.. but if im puttin it on again rapidly obs not good.i have to contact diabetic team as im under hosp for my treatment gp only prescribes what hosp tell them.i just feel if sugars dont lower whats point of it.

A dress size sounds alot in 3 weeks. I agree you need to contact your team then!

Welcome to the forum @kimkim

Sorrybto hear you are struggling with weight gain :( And that your meds don’t seem to be managing your BG levels effectively.

Insulin certainly does have a reputation for weight gain in some places, but we have very many long term insulin users (30 years in my case) who have not seen any appreciable weight gain at all. So it can’t *just* be the insulin, it must be something else going on too.

One of insulin’s jobs as a hormone is to enable the storage of excess glucose as fat if the body is taking in more carbohydrate than it needs.

Have you any idea of your approximate daily intake of carbohydrate?

Your elevated BG suggests that you are eating significantly more than your body can handle at the moment.

It may be helpful to keep a food diary for a week, to try to assess your carb intake (be brutally honest! And include all snacks too). Then the following week record BG values before and again 2hrs after eating alongside your carbs, to see if you can spot patterns.

Then begin to adjust portion sizes, and try swaps to see if you can keep the ‘meal rise’ down to 2-3mmol/L or lower. You will find your average BG comes down gradually if you can do that 🙂

hi, thankyou for the info, i was keeping a diary because i wanted to see spikes in b/s against what was eaten when and what i drank. but nurses said it dont matter. this treatment is new to me because ive never been asked to do blood sugar testing. your info has made me feel that i understand this so much more. iam going back now to keeping my food logs etc. i do have huge stress in my life ,im told this dont help. im not bothered about a couple of dress sizes but dont want to balloon to huge thats all. thankyou.

yes i have put this on in 3 weeks and im wondering ,as the other med was also an appetite suppressant that i was on n noted for weight loss,n now im not on this med, lixisenitide, perhaps some weight will fly back on plus the insulin dont suppress anything. but some ppl told me that they put lots of weight on with insulin.im going to speak with nurses. thanks
