I have just realised I have been self medicating for 5 days due to a head cold and awful sore throat.
But I have not looked at the sugar content.

Should I be doing that or not.

Thanks
Scotia.

What do you mean by self-medicating Scotia? Do you mean over the counter meds?

Hi Scotia, liquid stuff like Night Nurse is a syrup so high in sugar. From memory, Lemsip contains artificial sweeteners - but do check the label. Tablets shouldn't have a significant amount of sugar in them, however...

Shortly after diagnosis I was told to avoid all cold remedies because decongestants can raise both blood sugar and blood pressure, and to take plain paracetamol. These days, with better control all round, I can get away with a couple of days worth of tablets. Ask your GP or pharmacist to recommend something appropriate for you.

Do check with doctor or pharmacist, some over the counter remedies contain lots of sugar and others affect things like Blood Pressure and some will affect your diabetes meds.

Personally for myself I have always found paracetemol brings doen the temperature and helps ease aches and pains and plenty of warm sugar or reduced sugar drinks help to ease the sore throat. A shower always seems to help ease the chest.

If it continues for more than a few days it is always wise to seek medical help via your doctor or NHS direct or even the pharmacist.

I hope you feel better soon
