I cannot for the life of me grt my sugars down. I inject Humulin twice a day, 14units in the morning pre breakfast and 9units pre evening meal. This morning I had 2 Weetabix with semi skimmed milk (ran out of Almond milk) and my sugars have shot up to 16.2. My sugars pre breakfast were already at 12.3. What am I doing wrong? Am I on the wrong g insulin? I dont get to see my nurse until 8th Feb and I'm constantly ringing them, I'm panicking about food..... I eat next to nothing cos I'm s ared of it going up? I've recently had a stroke too so exercise is limited... I'm at my wits end. Please help...

Oh bless you. It’s horrible to be worried about food.

Weetabix aren’t massively high in carbs but they are still carby so when you’re starting out with a BG of 12 going up to 16 is the obvious result. Humulin won’t keep pace with the additional carbs.

Do you like eggs? They’re carb free and easy to make in whatever form you like them and might be a better breakfast for you until you get to speak to your team. Everyone is different in how many carbs they can tolerate with type 2 and balancing your meds with that can take a while to juggle. Keep a food diary if you can and if you can look at the carb content of what you’re eating that will help you to see what has the biggest impact on your BG. Some people do really well on low carb eating but it doesn’t suit everyone and if you prefer to eat carbs then it may mean swapping to a different insulin but that will be a discussion for you and your team.

Yes, I like eggs, have them everyday in a salad. Apart from my breakfast I make a conscious effort not to touch carbs, I read everything on the food label and if they cannot be avoided I eat minimal. I beginning to hate food, I an no longer eat anything tasty. I don't eat in-between meals. I'm fed up n worried I will have another stroke because my blood sugars are on the rise....

What kind of humilin do you take, is it just a long acting one or a mixed one? If it’s a mixed one then you might be able to change your dose to improve your bgs after food, but speak to your nurse if you’re not confident of doing this yourself. If it’s just a long acting one then perhaps adding a fast acting would help you deal with carbs better?

Humulin I is an intermediate basal insulin. It isn't designed to cover the carbs from food, just your liver output of glucose, so as has been mentioned, any carbs you eat will push your levels higher, particularly at breakfast time, so a lower carb breakfast is usually beneficial. I slice of medium wholemeal or seeded toast would half the carbs from your Weetabix and add a good dollop or peanut butter or a couple of eggs whichever way you like them and/or maybe some ham or I sometimes make an omelette with whatever needs using up in the fridge (almost always with cheese) and have that with a big plate of salad and a good dollop of cheese coleslaw (might seem odd having salad at breakfast but don't let tradition or culture limit your ideas of what breakfast can be.... I enjoy leftover curry sometimes or currently having slices of Brie with a little cranberry and orange sauce left over from Christmas) and that is a very filling breakfast and will usually see me through till my evening meal without the need for lunch or maybe a handful of nuts or a pot of olives with feta at lunchtime. Then meat or fish and veg for evening meal or I love a cauliflower and halloumi curry or a big plate of ratatouille maybe with chicken or high meat content sausages or quarter pounder or gammon..... or a big plate of cauliflower cheese made with any of those meats.

@tracy1971 Whats the full name of your Humulin - ie any letters or numbers after the word ‘Humulin’? You said in an earlier post you’re on glargine as a basal insulin, so is the Humulin for your meals?

It would really help you to get more tailored answers if you provided the exact names of your insulins and when you take them. If you’re staying high overnight, maybe you need more glargine? What’s your blood sugar immediately you wake up?

Ok, looking back it seems you do take the Humulin before two of your meals, but it would help if we had the name to avoid any confusion because in the thread below you say it’s an isophane insulin:

https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/hi-newbie-n-getting-to-grips.104232/

That wouldn’t be used for meals usually, and you wouldn’t take both glargine and isophane normally.
Apparently the Glargine was stopped and Humulin started last week by the looks of it..... https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/hi-newbie-n-getting-to-grips.104232/
so I am guessing the Humulin is Humulin I...... but I appreciate that it is dangerous to guess 😳 and should have asked for clarification.

Thanks @rebrascora 🙂 Yes, best to check - especially with something like Humulin where there are a number of different kinds. If the OP is just taking Humulin i (basal) then perhaps asking for an additional bolus insulin, as suggested on the other thread, might be a good idea.

It sounds like the basal dose is too low anyway, but maybe it’s being increased gradually, which would make sense.
