Hi Malcolm - sounds like you'll fit in really well here. Why not pop into a virtual pub - all drinks being virtual are of course entirely carb free, and you can snack on all sorts of also carb-free delicacies whilst enjoying the craic or drowning your sorrows.

Actually I wouldn't be at all surprised if they didn't allow virtual smoking in there too - although I think the virtual ashtrays are what they serve the Bombay and C-Diff Mix in these days.

I'm not a very great lover of just swapping white carbs for brown ones - if only it were THAT simple! You might be better off just cutting em down anyway really. (gradually!)
I do hope Malcolm doesn't find our pub tooo much of a shock 🙂.

The numbers e.g. 5.6 is what our blood glucose level is when we prick our fingers

Phew looks like a long road ahead a lot to learn wont be easy but a marathon i can win
Yes you can, just try to remember we've all been there before you and in time we've given Diabetes a right bashing. It's going to take time for you to learn about your diabetes , you see just like us diabetes is very individual. My body likes porridge others here need to avoid it like the plague because it sends their BG ( blood glucose) far to high.

Anything you're not sure about or want to know, just ask. No question is silly. This forum is great if you want a rant or a good laugh as well. The people on here have taught me more than anyone in the medical profession, and have become my support network. Not just that, but I also count them as friends.
Congratulations for finding us!🙂

Baby steps is the best approach and don't panic

Just mainly my diet
Just to give you an idea ,Try to cut down on Things like, bread esp white, pasta, rice and potatoes , fruit juice for us is like eating a bag of sugar, we need to be careful with fruit, grapes are little sugar bombs .
And now for the nice supprise, providing you are not a vegetarian, meat is good for us, including high meat content sausages and burgers , other goodies are eggs, cheese , bacon , veg that grows above ground. Sweet potatoes . We have quite a few good cooks on here , if you head over to the food carbs queries and recipes forum it will give you some ideas, none of us live on fresh air and lettuce.:D

Hi Malcolm & welcome to the forum. Seems like you've already been bombarded with a lot of good advice. One thing I would like to add is about testing your blood sugars. You may be lucky & get a meter & test strips from your doctor, but if not, the cheapest one is the SD Codefree from Amazon or Home Health which is perfectly adequate. BS (also known as BG or blood glucose) should be checked when waking, plus just before food & 2 hours after. You are looking for a rise of no more than 3 mmols after food. If you get a bigger spike, then try a smaller portion & if that doesn't help, avoid all together. Any more questions, please ask away.🙂

Welcome from a fellow T2

Hi im 51 in a few weeks to say that the diagnosis came as a shock is an understatement initially i went for other medical reasons and came out diabetic phew ive only been for my eye check nothing else yet. on the positive side ive quit sugar cut down on soft drinks changed bread to brown and the biggest change quit smoking after many years

Stopping smoking is a great first step. It will help you in so many ways. Luckily, I had stopped 9 years previous to my diagnosis in October 2009, so was already getting some benefit!

Anyway, like you, I had a panic to begin with, but very quickly got down to the task of sorting myself out. Modified my diet to reduce all carbs and ate more regularly to balance the load (I used to often miss meals, but ended up gorging in the evening). I also upped my exercise levels. I ended up doing an hours walk every day almost without fail. Anyway, the improvement in my symptoms was quite rapid. I ended up off all medication in three months of diagnosis and have been diet and exercise only ever since.

Even after a period of recent decline (I'd stopped being quite so focussed after getting married!) I am still fitter and happier than at any time 10 years previous to diagnosis (and probably longer). So, there can be a really good light at the end of the tunnel (and it isn't an on-coming train!!).

Andy 🙂
