Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Well i'm off to give a fasting blood sample in the morning. I'm scared, I don't know enough about Diabetes, don't know what I should be eating.

I don't know anything!

Mum & Brother both Diabetic, never thought I was until last week when I tested my blood (after a sugary cereal + oatcakes at breakfast) and it was 16.4 - a few hours later it was down to 4.6 (does that seem possible?)

Doctor says I don't present as a typical Diabetic - not thirsty, don't pee a lot, not tired but that 16.4 scared me 😱 He thinks I may be glucose intolerant.

I'm worried about what I should be eating and how much. Grateful for any thoughts

Hey im pretty new only been diagnosed a couple of months and its a very daunting thought I think everyone around me has tested to see if they could be diabetic and I can honestly say each and every person has been nervous and thats just waiting 5 seconds. I hope you find out if you are or not atleast you can move forward once you know. The main advice I can give is if you do have it you will learn 😉 fingers crossed you dont though and good luck...

Don't worry about what you ought not to be eating until you know if you have it or are Gluc intolerant.

If either tests positive then you'll get excellent advice here.

Yes it is possible for BG to do that, esp in T2. There are 2 phases of insulin production, the first phase happens when any carbohydrate goes in your mouth. Then the second phase kicks in once you've swallowed it and Mr Stomach tells Mr Pancreas how much. (it's a deal more complicated than that of course, but that's the easy way of explaining it !)

Looks like your Phase 1 might be missing, but your Phase 2 takes over and deals with it once it knows about it. Mind you how long after that meal was the first test? cos everyone's BG does go up after eating but not normally that high !

Thanks for the replies 🙂

I'd say 90mins or so after i'd had my breakfast the first test was taken.

If i'd only had the second test i'd have thought I wasn't diabetic at all. Just shows how many people there are undiagnosed and walking around with sky-high BG.

What about the lack of other symptoms? I'm rarely thirsty, not especially tired, blood pressure normal.
