Welcome @Lian1979 🙂

How long have you had Type 2? Are you on any medication for it? How are you finding everything?

Hello Inka, i was diagnosed type 2 around October ive been put on Metformin, this has recently been upped now to 2000mg i am not going to lie i haven’t been good emotionally just taking it all in has been alot but i am trying to help myself by reading books and joining this group too so i hope my journey won’t be too grim !!! x

Hello Lian I agree it is all a bit overwhelming when you begin the journey
but it is OK really, managing your carbs is a key to it I think, lots of nice folk
on here to give you any help you require xx

Ah, so early days for you. Yes, diabetes is a big lifestyle change and it’s normal to feel a whole range of emotions - disbelief, upset, resentment, worry. Those gradually reduce 🙂

Do you know what your HbA1C was when you were diagnosed? It will be a number like 52, 65, 89, 103 or whatever.

Welcome to the forum @Lian1979

Diagnosis is a shock at any time and there is a lot to get your head round. As others have said it is all the carbohydrates that we eat that will change into glucose once inside us. This is not just the more obvious things like sweets and biscuits, but also pasta, rice, potatoes.

It is well worth becoming familiar with the carb content of your meals. I had no idea about this before diagnosis, and once I started to calculate them I was surprised at just how many I was eating each day. There is info on packets, apps available to help with this and also there is always google.

Keep asking questions on here, as there is plenty of experience to tap into.

Welcome to the forum @Lian1979

48 is the cut-off point for a diagnosis with diabetes, and results over 42 suggest someone is ‘at risk of diabetes’.

Your result of 61 is fairly ‘mid range’ in forum history terms - we have had several members who join in three figures, so while 61 does suggest you need to take your diagnosis seriously and take appropriate actions to help your body cope with the food you are eating, it also suggests you have every chance of managing your diabetes successfully.

Feel free to ask away with any questions you may have, nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’ 🙂

I wouldn’t say carbs are evil, you just need to be aware of how they impact you. This could be things like having one slice instead of two, or having a walk after eating. Some like burgen soya and linseed bread and it’s on the lower carb side of breads. Personally I stick to bread of 15g carb per slice but there are others much lower than that.

Yes, lower carb but that’s as it’s mainly air . See how you find it.

I eat livlife can only be got here from Waitrose, some folk don't like this
but I find it moist and packed full of seeds although small it is imo really
nice and only 3.8g of carbs and fills me up all depends on what you like

Many members find the lower carb breads like Burgen Soya and Linseed, or Vogel are kinder on their BGs. Some find multi-seed OK, but Your Diabetes May Vary. The only way to be sure, and to know how bread affects your BG levels is to check with a BG meter. That way you’ll know if one slice, two slices or only half a slice is the right portion size for you 🙂
