Sorry to hear you went through this! I have had a couple of hypos and not done anything different. I’m putting some of it down to the weather and carefully adjusting insulin.
I understand the bit about not wanting to take insulin, especially when you are on your own and trying to avoid a similar episode from happening. But don’t not take it, just keep in contact with your DSN and follow advice carefully.
